Martin, where do you get the idea of the red and orange squares? I presume they alternate, one getting bigger and one smaller.

What do people think of them using a 24 hour clock with hours, minutes and seconds underneath the BBC NEWS 24 instead?

Well BBC World have been using Orange Squares in their graphics for a while now. Also when putting the clock beneath the logo, there was a gap, which I wanted to fill. The Date was too big so I thought of animated squares. Animating, because it would give a feeling of constant movement, making it seem constantly doing something, to add to the continuous flowing feeling the channel lacks.

I have no knowledge from "the inside" other than whats been revealed here.

I think they're good, and would work.

I can't check now, as the clock has been gone for the best part of two days now, but IIRC it was in 24-hour clock anyway on News 24, so I would imagine it would stay like that?

No, wasn't 24 hour.

The News 24 clock WAS 24 hour. ITV and Sky News both use a 12 hour clock but the News 24 one has, for the last two years at least (that's as long as I've been able to watch it) been 24 hours.

Can't remember who first suggested it, but I like the desk lighting up red when a breaking news event occurs.

You could have the entire studio and graphics set turning red, then the camera pulls out to show the entire newsroom, followed by a tracking shot of the presenter walking through to the various correspondents to show how up-to-the-minute it all is, complete with Douglas Hurd (standing by), SmartBomb Steven, Douglas Trox at the Newspipe, but first, weather, with Sylvester Stewart.

Oops, sorry, that's The Day Today. Must've got a bit carried away there.

I was just about to say The Day Today Wink
Do you mean something like this... re: desk lighting up red?

Not sure if that would be a little bit too sarcastic- i.e. if someone dies and suddenly the newsdesk turns red? Morbid?

I LIKE .... I think it's well kewl.

Though obviously yes a bit too disrespectfull when it's a death.

But if it is a death then they could alternate it to 'Breaking News' but instead of using the RED Colour put in the standard 'ROYAL DEATH - Colours' you know when it's a Royal death or Senior politician.

May be they could practise it on Monday

I can imagine Jon Sopel sitting there twirling his finger and looking at the desk as it cycles through the colours and then shouting "STOP" when it lands on red for breaking news.

Or is this just for the entertainment news - a way of making the news more enjoyable?

In these events they simulcast with News24 from the World Studio. I expect it's happened a couple of times over the weekend.

Looking at the BBC One schedule and to my knowledge this has happened once, at 5.10pm. During this time there was a joint broadcast between N24 and World with Phil Hayton in the World newsroom. There will be another at 10 but that will be the last before the BIG change.

Yes - 5pm today. World joined forces with News 24 for a joint bulletin with Philip Hayton. It was basically an overnight bulletin in the daytime! Is the BBC1 News sheduled for 10pm tonight? If so, then there'll be another clash, in which case they'll probably join Joanna and Tim.

Yeah at 5.00pm this afternoon, BBC World and BBC News 24 joined together, with News 24's gfxs, which just looks awful on World, oh well tomorrow there will be new ones! Smile
