Surveyors working on the construction site for the new Chelsfield shopping centre have discovered a metal object buried several metres below the ground at the far end of the development site. (i.e. the furthest point from TVC). The BBC is working closely with the police and emergency services on this issue. We are satisfied, on their advice, that there is presently no danger that would require evacuation of any BBC buildings.

On the advice of the police and in view of the history of the area, there is a possibility that this might be an unexploded WWII bomb. Experts will be carrying out further investigation of the object and should be able to identify it by 9.00am on Saturday, 6th December.

If it is a bomb then they will need to make it safe and some homes at the far end of the development site (i.e. the furthest point from TVC) will be evacuated for the duration of this procedure. The police have advised that it is perfectly safe for local people to stay in their homes until otherwise notified.

Seems that it shouldn't affect TVC... hopefully!

We've known about this UXB for a while. There are contingency plans in place, everyone at TVC knows what they are (basically involves sending a lot of people home!)

There is a remote possibility that TVC may need to be evacuated, either partially or completely. Plans have been made to cope with this situation should it arise.

Not the usual presenters this morning on News24.. perhaps a sign that the regulars are doing a pilot in the new studio this morning?

Yep - there are two levels of awareness about UXBs.

1. The current situation was flagged (but not for broadcast) early evening last night.
2. The developers and the BBC have been aware that they are likely to discover UXBs on the site since before they started work. This is, I believe, because a number of wartime bombs were reported to have fallen in the area, but were never recovered and were never reported to have exploded.

Matt.

Using a black backgrounds is going to deal with that horrible widescreen edge problem that makes N24 look so "rough around the edges" as the width of the input material changes...

Actually I think she's on holiday.

With Me, Tim Wilcox
Hey guys, this is my first post and have been keeping tabs on the News 24 relaunch thread on here for ages. Just got a few thoughts you lot might have some feedback on:

Arrow Australia Direct and Hardtalk are now using a similar Aston, albeit in different colours (AD = orangey, HT = black). Both use the Helvetica font. Is this an indication to an Aston for the N24 relaunch? This is also used on Reporters, along with a black and orange backdrop...
Arrow i hope they become consistent with their use of "beds" during the N24/World simulcast. Sometimes they use an N24 bed and other times they use the proper World bed (when updating headlines/doing "In brief")... i think most ppl agree that the World Ident/Stings/beds are much better

Did anyone see HARDtalk this morning?

Alastair introduced it, the titles went and then when Tim Sebastian introduces the programme he went something like "Autocue..Autocue" then cut to blank screen and back to Alastair.

After about 40 second we went back to HARDtalk and Tim Sebastian now with autocue.

Is the 0430 edition live then? Or did News 24 play out some out-take copy?

This 'black globe' has been used on News 24 and BBC World for quite a while now.
