I've just been thinking about this (uh-oh!) A few people in this thread have been saying that these power supply problems were due to the BBC "needing more time to do the new studio"... well, have a think about this.... The first time the BBC had power problems during the news, Huw Edwards was on air... and who was on a couple of days ago and apologised for being in a different studio due to power problems... Huw Edwards!
Maybe these power problems have something to do with him?
Think about it!

Arrgh! I last time I looked at this topic there was only 187 page!
Could someone give me a quick summary of what the hecks been happening (or not in the BBC's case). If what I think has happened it does seem as if the BBC's backup generator isn't much use.

Power cut at 07.55ish on Friday, knocked out News 24, Five Live, Radio 4 and all OB etc to Breakfast (so no weather, regional news). Got working again in a way by 08.30, but not fully until 4pm.
News 24 launch delayed a week.
Power went again at about 8pm ish on Wednesday (was it Wed?) and took out News 24 again. News 24 and World combined and the 10 came from the News 24 CSO studio.
Some reports of News 24 launch off until Jan, but not confirmed.

It's worth pointing out that the problem wasn't due to a power cut or a generator failing..... there was plenty of electricity. It was a device inside the news centre that failed - a bit that connects the mains/generator to the equipment

Trailer for BBC News 24 BBC News 24, 12 July 2003, 0800
The Complaint
A viewer complained about an over-emphasis on tragic deaths.
The Broadcaster’s Statement
The BBC said that brief trails for the twenty-four hour news services were intended to remind viewers that the service provided coverage of “breaking stories”. The clips in question had been chosen as reminders of stories which had been the subject of prominent recent coverage at that time.
The Commission’s Finding
A Standards Panel watched the trailer, which included images of twins who had died in an operation to separate them, a multiple death pile-up and a toddler who had been shot. It considered the cumulative effect of such footage at a time when children were likely to have been watching could have been distressing. The complaint was upheld. Upheld CN 11801
