If this is the basis of the new look, I think it looks quite fresh and clean- it fits in with NickyS' description of evolution rather than revolution as the main aston is still white on black, with a red patch to the right. I like the orange strap line, but this is probably only for specialised programming and would most probably be red for general stories. There is very obviously space for a ticker to run below the aston, and the red patch on the right could feature story specific graphics (pretty much exclusively for widescreen viewers, as they have used on several occasions with the current graphics set). Or this could be the home of the globe that we've been hearing so much about.

I don't think it looks that bad having the clock where it is at the moment, but I think the size would have to be decreased so that it lined up with the ticker- the text running behind the clock as currently. I also fancy that benjy predicted right is his excellent mocks (well worth checking out in the mocks forum), in that the left hand side of the screen would then be free to emphasise breaking news (connecting up with the aston) and taking up the whole of the bottom of the screen (like we have permanently on the current graphics set).

Rachel Attwell's just been on LBC 97.3's media programme with Matt Wells.

Sadly it was very obviously recorded on Thursday or earlier, as it refers to the relaunch as tomorrow...

Further to the Weather changes, I see there is a row about Michael Fish being on the way out from the BBC's weather forecasts and the BBC Talent search for a new forecaster.

Alan Coren in last Tuesday's Times

And the letters of protest in today's issue

And a rambling piece by Boris Johnson from the Telegraph

And this was in the Telegraph about 10 days ago
Quote:
Weatherman Fish 'off the hook'

The BBC last night denied claims that it was about to drop the veteran weatherman Michael Fish, 59, from its broadcasts because he was too old.

A spokesman said there was no truth in reports that it wanted to replace him with younger presenters. Mr Fish who has been presenting for the corporation since 1974, was unavailable for comment.

These long threads appear to be another branch of RTS' power trip. The majority of them are created by him and even after the discussion has died off, he will bring it back up to the top with a question like "So when is George Back?".

I have just noticed the BBCi idents (the BBC News website "Latest" video link) have changed - did this happen today?

Since it says "the latest from News 24" are we to assume this is the sound as well as the look we can expect?

(apologies if this has been discussed already - there's only so many pages of screen grabs with some egomaniac's "pretend DOG" promoting their own site that one can sit through!)

Well, I've had a look and I can't see any changes. Perhaps they've put it back.

Again I thought the interview was interesting, very good that she admitted that News 24 had faults and that this rebrand should put these right. It hopefully shpudl mean that they really do mean business this time and its the actual channel that is going to change and not just the look if the channel.

Well that is the point of the whole exercise.... when the review happened the result was never going to be: 'channel's fine, needs new graphics though'

That's why it's a relaunch, not a rebrand

On a slightly different issue - regional opts during breakfast.
How reliable is your region?

South East Today didn't opt at all this morning (at least certainly not on DSAT, I don't have analogue setup anymore), and its not the first time its happened.

Scanning through the 940s on the EPG all the others looked fine - but its frustrating because we rarely get an apology or an explanation..

GOOD GOD, I have had quite enough of this.

Why on Earth, Larry, would they REBRAND?

Relaunch, revamp, FINE. But reBRAND?

A rebranding exercise would mean changing the name of the channel, something even the most stupid of BBC people are unlikely to want.

Re: the graphics. Makes them look even more like Sky than ever before.

I thought this piece by Emily Bell from the printed Media Guardian was a bit unfair to criticise News 24 for showing HardTalk at lunchtime on Friday - those were hardly normal circumstances!

I think that must have been the 1st time Emily Bell has watched the channel, or did she not realise there was a power failure?

She could not have believed that this was regular programming and make a direct comparison with Sky in such a situation. Unless indeed this was the 1st time she saw the channel, which begs to ask why is she writing an artical on something she doesnt have a clue about!? OR is she simply using the situation to put an unfair view across.. either way not good journalism is it?

I think the point she's trying to make is that News 24 lacks the pace, interest and "stickability" of Sky News.

The problem isn't the amount of people watching, it's how long they watch for. In this respect, Sky is leagues ahead. Sky's more snappy, interesting, busy approach keeps viewers watching... News 24's doesn't.

Same situation with Fox and CNN in the US. During the war, more people actually tuned into CNN, but Fox viewers stuck around for a lot longer.
