If News 24 relaunched with a giant newswall behind the set, it'd look like a carbon copy of Sky, and utterly defeat the object of trying to make the channel more distinctive.
But of course, c@t, they could always have a newswall but place it
to one side
, because that would make a distinctive service.
I really hope they're going to try something a little different. From the sounds of that Observer article, they haven't really decided yet - which is all the more confusing when you think of the news we've heard of dates set for new set construction.
Ive found that news 24 headline music is not fast-paced unlike World.
Yes I think N24 could do with having a headline bed similar to World's in that there are thunderclaps in it, so the presenters have to read the headlines out with a bit more pace. Rather than the current bed where the bor(ing)/(ed) presenter just ambles through the headlines seemingly without any urgency.
Maybe after the relaunch they will try to make it seem a bit more fast-paced, but I don't hold out any hope...
The bed, I agree is too slow. You get that racing countdown music into zero then your greeted with Duuuuuuum Dum Dee Duuuuuuum Dum which to me just sounds like one not played for a few secs. They need to deepen it like worlds and speed it up to give that sense of drama to it. The presenters need Whitened up rather than Redened. And I do now agree the cream has to go. It's only adds ot the problem that red creates. Silver and Red I've always thought should have been the way they went from the beginning.
The presenters need Whitened up rather than Redened.
En Anglais, s'il vous plait?
Even if it was grammatically correct and said
The presenters need whitening up rather than reddening
, I still wouldn't have a clue what you meant.
Come on, Ian, you're usually clearer than that.

Even though they couldn't be arsed to create one like World's they could have used the National's bed with the thunder claps, as N24's is essentially the National's minus the thunderclaps, and it would fit perfectly well with the current 'elephant' theme.
Newsroom said earlier that David Lowe
has
produced new music, so maybe there's a new and improved headline bed in there, with a little more substance and urgency.
Yeah well I'm sorry I can't satisfy your need for perfect posts but being up and working since 7am this morning has it's downsides.
Besides that "And I do now agree the cream has to go" the trailing sentance gave a slight hint to what I was talking about. The combination of Red & Cream walls has a tendancy to make the presenters faces appear as if they are redder than they actually are. My room in these colours I can tell exactly what it's like. I don't blame the red I actually blame the cream. The red is fine but the cream seems to glow red when the lighting is right and it's vile.

Really? I love how it does that although it probably is because it fits in perfectly with my highly over saturated TV.

Now this might work quite well with their newfound "willingness" to analyse if they use it correctly. They've kinda used one with CSO (right down to cheesey superimposed handrails) but not to much effect really.
Why would it work quite well?
It would be yet another blatant copy of Sky by News 24 - something the BBC are trying to hard to avoid. Sky are clearly making the Newswall part of their studio designs - as has been seen with the latest Westminster studio.

Though I'm a fan of Sky's presentation in general, I can't help but feel the Westminister newswall is a bit of overkill - it doesn't really offer a whole lot of functionality.
BUT if we're discussing at the level of blatent copying then perhaps the same could be said of Sky in that CNBC had one first! The difference is in how they're used, and it's still possible that News 24 could use one in a way that makes them distinctive. (Perhaps Philip Hayton could narrate next to it whilst driving back to the home counties in his Jag!)
Sky do tend to overuse their wall to show photos when gallery generated graphics would do just as well, and I hear that recently they went to recorded programming just because they had a vision problem with a few of their "decorative" feeds. To me the only real reason for such a feature is to guide the viewer through facts, and give interviewees outside the studio a bigger physical presence, lord knows those tiny plasmas are akward. Considering how useless at making things look nice for most of the time News 24 is, they'd use it more conservatively which might help them make their analytical points more poignantly.

Ah. Well I didn't know that. Though I'd be surprised if there isn't new music when the relaunch happens, or at least relatively soon after. But having said that, the National news is still using the old music isn't it. The Beeb aren't exactly renowned for finishing a job in the relaunch department are they!
The National Music was the first of the lot and it's actually fine. It does the job and I think changing it would already it's already dramatic intro. But News 24 definatly needs the music changed. Unlike the National version N24 music seems to have lost it sense of uniqueness and dramtic stylism.
Yeah, I agree. The 1/6/10 music (don't know why people call them the 'national' news - isn't News 24 national?) is OK because it's only used three times a day.
The News 24 music should be less dramatic as if it's dramatic all the time it gets annoying! Perhaps they should have more dramatic music for breaking news?
I've said this before, but to me a 24 hour station needs refreshing quite often as it's on more. Why they updated the 1/6/10 before N24 I don't know!

No, I'm sorry, but I totally disagree.
Everyone knows that Newswall = Sky and Sky = Newswall.
For News 24 to say "we're going to be more distinctive" and relaunch with a giant newswall would be laughable, and they'd (yet again) get slaughtered in the press.
The Westminster newswall is not overkill, in my opinion it looks hugely impressive. I bet you'd rather have it than what was there before - a flat, dull wall.
As it stands, it doesn't appear to be particularly functional at the moment, but when more programming starts to come out of Westminster you'll undoubtably see it being used more effectively.
Anyway, AFAIK, Sky fears of a News 24 newswall are unfounded.
