Even if the graphics have text that lines up properly, and fonts that don't look tacky and just generally wrong, I'll be impressed as it'll be a vast improvement. Although seriously, I don't think any package of graphics will "blow Sky out of the water" - maybe a decent lineup of presenters who are free to be themselves and not talking robots would, but graphics just won't.

The channel needs to be slick and fast-paced. From what I've heard, it won't be. Other than some flashy graphics, it'll still be same old crap, and it won't affect Sky in any way.

I think that "what you've heard" means "what you've read". Nearly everything to do with the channel is being changed, not just presentation. As part of the relaunch the agenda of the channel has been extensively reviewed, and I'd imagine will be changed to make it more fast paced, better flagging and coverage of breaking news, and made more distinct compared to Sky and ITV NC.

I really don't know why people go on about "robot" presenters, many of them are perfectly good at what they do on News 24, being experienced and informed journalists in one way or another, granted some aren't (yes most if not all of them did do something else before News 24). If you really want to compare with "robot" presenters, at least check out ITV NC as well, where there are presenters like Sasha Herriman and Lloyd Bracey to name at least two of them who you could label as "robots".

Sasha Herriman and Lloyd "caught with Natasha"Bracey are only part-time on the ITVNC anyway, and it's not really comparable considering they read on their own and don't have anybody to feed off like the N24 people do. The point of comparison should be with Sky, where they manage to be both authoritive and 'human' at the same time.

I wasn't implying that I have any inside knowledge. "What I've heard" is quite a common phrase used to mean "what I have gathered from different sources". I don't know anybody who works for the BBC, that doesn't mean I don't have some idea what is going on. If you want someone who pretends to have inside knowledge, then see Rod, Big Brother, etc etc.

I'm not doubting the journalistic integrity of News 24 presenters. They are obviously good to be where they are, but the format of the channel really does them no favours and makes even the liveliest of presenters seem dull and uninterested. And why would I want to comment on ITV News presenters in this thread?

From what I have gathered from reading here and elsewhere (happy?) the channel will still plod along. It won't beat Sky News. Ever.

I think the problem with the news 24 presenters is that there a lot of good presenters - Phillip, Jane, the two Chris', Mawhinney, Peter Sissons, Anna Jones. But there are some really bad ones who drag the good presenters totally down - Louise Munchings, Susannah *yawn on* Reid, Gosling, Gracie, Andrew Simmonds & Matthew Amolriwialwlwliaiaiwala.

Its getting the combinations right, as well as getting new talent and mathcing the presenters to a suited time of day. Phillip Hayton, to me, does not suit 9 o clock in the morning, but more 4 o clock in the afternoon.

Relaxing the schedules of having sport and weather at exactly here and there would also help to relax things.

That is quite a stupid thing to say. It's been suggested on here and elsewhere that it is very likely that quite soon Sky News with the "foxification", i.e. personality-led shows like O`Reilly, Hannity & Colmes etc. I believe that News 24 will improve post-relaunch, and if Sky News does go down the FOX News style, News 24, and perhaps ITV NC could capitalise on that.

Will the new set have plasma screens on either side?

I don't have the slightest idea whether I'm right, but I'm imagining they'll go for something a bit different to the traditional plasma on either side approach. Something more along the lines of...a news-wall type idea?

I don't think that would be copying Sky. I mean, if you took that kind of logic, you would also have to say that ITV News copied BBC News when they added the computer generated second back-projection screen, so that there was a large screen on either side of the desk. If something's a good idea, it's a good idea, and people always take inspiration and parts of ideas from others around them - if they didn't nothing would improve.

Now I will say at this point I haven't seen them ... but to quote a mate of mine who has the new News 24/World graphics will 'blow Sky out of the water' in what they can do/look ... I'm told the titles are very different. Roll on the 1st.

Has to be said, blowing Sky out of the water in the graphics steaks does not take a great deal of work.

Anyway, I thought News 24 weren't bothered in what Sky were doing anymore, I thought they had spent too long defining themselves by Sky. Clearly still their key focus behind the scenes.

Either way, I hope that if they are at least half decent it'll prompt Sky to pull their finger out and do something.

I do hope that World does follow News 24 with its on screen presentation, one question, in News 24 actually getting new titles and is BBC One getting a new special News Ident before every bulliten.

Both News 24 and BBC One news are getting new titles. And yes there will be a pre-news ident on BBC One. I think that the new titles, at least on BBC One, will follow the BBC LDN theme, well both LDN and Look East have similar themes. When BBC Scotland moves to its new studios, and Reporting Scotland revamps (early 2005) it will follow the same news theme as Look East and BBC LDN probably.

It has been rumoured that BBC One News would be getting new titles for a while, and that it might happen at the same time as News 24, but it hasn't been confirmed as such anywhere, so how do you know? The pre-news ident has been rumoured to come in at the same time as the titles.

I wouldn't have thought that BBC One News would follow the LDN style titles, it wouldn't suit a national news programme.

Addtionally, since BBC World looks like getting a graphics update to fit in with News 24, it could be that BBC World would get updated titles to fit in with News 24 and possibly BBC One?

They could use a virtual graphic in the middle of the two presenters, but I think it would up too much like Sky News then.

Managed to get a bit of sketchy info on the new look out of someone 'in the know' yesterday.

Apparently the titles are to feature people, a bit like in the regional news ones, but somehow reflecting England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The studio will feature a 'standing up' area with a big screen/newswall (not sure which), and there's to be some kind of Breaking News sound effect a la Sky.

All fairly unsurprising really... and not sure exactly how this is meant to make News 24 more distinctive. Although, as I say, it's very sketchy 2nd hand info, so I wouldn't stake my life on it. Clearly we'll know more on 1st Dec.

The "people" titles would fit into the current live action countdowns if they are being retained, so that is a possiblity,

I think the standing up area would likely be a large rear projection screen like the N6 has and TC7 has for Newsnight, and it makes sense, because Sky have the newswall, and ITV NC has the rear projection screen (although it is hardly ever used for standing up like on the ITV1 bulletins). Not even sure if there would be enough space in the News 24 studio space for a newswall!

The breaking news effect (visual animation and/or sound effect) would fit in with better flagging and awareness of breaking news.

News 24 might make very different uses of these compared to Sky, so it is a wait and see thing. But there are bound to be many other changes as well.
