Isn't Broadcasting House a listed building, and therefore major building work such as a huge extension would not really be allowed?

My house in west Wales is in a National Park and we need planning permission and National Park permission if we were to build an extention or something. Rolling Eyes

Something tells me they've probably worked that out already...

Yes, as they've already started building! All planning permission granted.

Ooooooooh, December 1st in the confirmed date for the new look as written in todays Media Guardian. Simon McCoy also joins news 24 as well as presenting on Breakfast from time to time. The article says Sissons and Sopel will also front the new channel.

If Simon McCoy's going to be doing Breakfast when Dermot's away, then surely this means the end of Bill's occasional weeks with Natasha. I shouldn't imagine Mr Turnbull is too impressed with this apparent demotion to Fridays and weekends only (and nor am I for that matter).

I've interpreted the article as saying that Bill is still the second male presenter, and that McCoy will be occasionally filling in for Dermot, as well as filling in for Bill. So Bill isn't being demoted by any means. The article itself says that the emphasis is on his reporting role for News 24.

I presume it means that Jon is going to concentrate on News 24. So that will be Simons job - filling in when Jon does now.

Remember Jon Sopel is also the stand in presenter for Newsnight - so there is plenty of opportunity for presenting shifts for Simon.

The BBC Press Release actually says:

"Simon will deputise for Breakfast's existing male presenters, Dermot Murnaghan and Bill Turnbull, joining a team which also includes Natasha Kaplinsky and Sian Williams."

So, in fact it seems to imply that Dermot and Bill are equal to each other.

While there are a number of possibilities here,

what I imagine they are trying to do is to fix exactly which presenters viewers can expect to see on which days. They want viewers to see Dermot and Natasha on Monday - Thursday, and Bill and Sian on Friday - Sunday. If Dermot or Bill are away, Simon will fill in. So whereas at the moment if Dermot is away Bill fills in and someone else (e.g. Jon) does the weekend, I imagine this will mean Simon filling in with Bill remaining at the weekend.

Hence a demotion for Bill as far as I can see.

It may be that they just want to give a little more continuity - Bill seems to be away from Breakfast a lot at the moment, what with his work on the 6 and then filling in for Dermot, and they have had all sorts of people filling in at the weekend (Stephen Cole, Jon Sopel, Tim Wilcox...). It will be a shame if Bill never gets to work with Natasha any more though.

Have a look at the poll at the top of the page!

Shows what we all know - the lowest vote is the correct one!

Just over a week to go and still hardly any details....either they're really keeping this one under wraps or people are just being mean with their information.

Why do News 24 cover PMQs when it's also on BBC2?
