Can anyone tell me what the mounted screens are behind the presenter are for? They seem to be mounted above the newsroom part. You can see them on a full shot of the studio.

I also have another question, about News 24 in general. How come they have regional presenters on? Mike Embley seems sensible enough with him being based in that region (Newsroom South East), but why do they make Susan Osman travel along the M4 to London every weekend from Bristol where she presents Points West? Wouldn't it be more sensible to have someone like John Nicolson or Chris Eakin on overnight on Sat/Sun?

The screens display BBC One, Two, News24 and I think Parliament but someone may correct me on that.
They also have BBC News Online on a couple.
They are basically there as a design feature, not for a useful purpose.

On the subject of the presenters, I think it is just a choice, Susan may want to present on News 24 and may have family she goes to visit in London or something like that.
They would obviously never get anyone from any other region than, South, East, West, South East and of course London now too.
I don't think Susan has to go in but I would guess that it doesn't take too long to get to London along the M4 corridor and she probably gets paid more for presenting than her travel costs anyway!
It is most probably sent around as an option to all of the regional news teams in the South and the presenters interested in it will be put on a rota system.

Sorry about this - just thought of something else!

What does everyone think about News 24 having an ident at the top of the hour like BBC World, with the annoucer saying something like:

'24 hours a day, this is BBC News 24, with ...........'

'Live from Television Centre, this is BBC News 24, 24 hours a day'

What do you think?

It's a nice idea but I think that they want to make it all news. Continuity isn't really needed on a 24 hour news channel, and although BBC World is a news channel it isn't really as newsy as News 24 - if that makes any sense!
I think the only reason BBC World has continuity or annoucers is because of the wide range of programming on the channel, people may not know exactly what is coming up next and so a man/woman telling them what is happening makes sense whereas on News 24 you just expect news to be at the top of every hour and it just goes straight into it.
I think it would be better if there was a better intro to BBC News on the hour, by this I mean they should perhaps have a camera looking over the newsroom and News 24 on a large plasma screen the camera zooms into the plasma screen and fades in the N24 studios and then you could have an annoucer saying 'This is BBC News 24, with......' instead of just fading in after the ident and having the two presenters introduce themselves.
I guess Sky will do this at relaunch, have a camera over the newsroom and with that camera zoom towards the studios in the corner of the newsroom whilst a VO guy says something like 'From the Sky News Centre this is Sky News on the hour, with X and X'

I suggeseted that to a BBC person, and they replied by saying that compared with BBC World which does have a voiceover becauses its not a 24 hour news channel, there are lots of other programmes in between.

Whereas News 24 is a rolling news channel, an announcer at the top of each hour would be very repetitive, which i agree.

BBC WORLD is more of a factual channel than news channel.

It has 30 minutes of news every hour, then it is followed by a recoreded programme. Sometimes they even shorten the news to about 10 minutes when the show a 50 minute programme.

Although they do have news, I wouldn't call them a news channel.

Each show is self contained, it finishes and that is that. Whereas on News 24, even if something like Hardtalk is coming on, they update you with the main news for 4 minutes. That means its a rolling news channel.

The screens are merely decoration - and they are mounted inside the studio itself, almost touching the glass window behind.

Blimey, it doesn't half look as if they're on the other side!! They must be touching the glass in that case!

Sorry Rob, I got the last post mixed up - the monitors are on the other side of the glass, above the computers.

I've extracted this bit out of a wide shot of the studio from the newsroom bit, and you can see that the glass is on the other side of the monitors.
