Also, I see in Broadcast that the War on Terrorism will be a barometer for how well N24 have done in the forthcoming investigation into the channel (postponed again).
If you were to judge it on the election, as was previous suggested, then it should've been closed. Sky were excellent during the election, far better than the Beeb or ITN.
The fact is, they've been delaying this investigation for so long now, I think 1999 prompted the original calls for an investigation and 3 years later and they're still trying to get their act together (the government, that is, not News 24).
News 24 shouldn't - and won't be - axed. No matter how irritating I find parts of the channel it has bred a lot of talent for the BBC, and if only for that reason it deserves to stay. It will improve, Sky was god-awful for the first few years it was on air and recieved very little recognition amongst the media for a good few years, much like News 24. I'd be much happier with News 24 if it forgot for one moment that it was operated by the BBC and that it doesn't have to keep a stiff upper lip all of the time.
Looking at the viewing figures, well, they've been fairly level the past few weeks, although Sky is still leading by a reasonable amount.
Figures released yesterday show the ratings of - I think - the New York plane crash. Sky pulled in more than three times the viewing figures that News 24 pulled in, but in fairness News 24 was playing out on BBC One. The worrying this is this, Sky pulled in 400,000 viewers (in the Uk alone) for the New York crash at 4pm in the afternoon. However, 4pm that day doesn't register as top spot on News 24, which would indicate - as research has also indicated - that people turn to Sky News before they turn to News 24.
It's the same thing with CNN in the USA. Whilst FOX does well in the ratings on a 'regular' day, when there's a crisis CNN's viewing figures outweigh Fox's by miles. 'tis the Crisis News Network.
Mike, if your a new-media-man like me then you can read most of Broadcast at www.produxion.com. Sadly, this site is about as functional as a giraffe's neckwarmer and so is a pain in the arse to load.

Well Sky just happens to be the first news channel in the Sky EPG, so naturally my parents turn to Sky News, it's only me who watches BBC News 24 for half an hour!
I'm just about sick of people saying that the reason Sky News gets more viewers is because it's at the top of the EPG. I can site plenty of examples for you that disprove this arguement.
Sky News and BBC News 24 attract a specific type of audience, broadsheet readers. They know what they want and will turn elsewhere if they don't like it.
Are you seriously telling me that BBC 2 gets more viewers than ITV1 because people can't be bothered to look what's on ITV1 as it would require the pressing of another button? Come off it.

If youuread the above reply properly, you will see I was not making an argument, I was merly making an observation into my parents viewing!
