The BBC are thinking of merging BBC News 24 and BBC World. A new name has not yet been thought up.
The new channel, watever its name will broadcast news 24 hours a day around the clock on anolgue. People with a digital satalite receiver however will be able to watch either the news or an alternate programme such as talking movies.
This is just a plan but is quite possible because BBC News are looking for ways to cut costs. Simply having Breakfast go out on BBC One as well as News 24 have saved them millions.

Was your source dated 1998? If so, then yes, I'd believe it, because it was extremely likely then...but now...I'm not so sure...
Also another impossible happening...it cannot broadcast 24 hours a day on ANALOGUE...unless they're thinking of substituting it for BBC Two!

Sorry, I was in the middle of something else as I posted the above message...here is a list of reasons why the channels CANNOT merge:
- WORLD has just been rebranded with a new countdown and new set
- BBC Breakfast would be severely disrupted (international viewers would see no sense in broadcasting British internal news stories, whilst domestic viewers will wonder why the programme has started to look at events from an international point of view rather than a British one).
- BBC WORLD carries advertisements, BBC NEWS 24/ONE does not...if they did devise a system of ads on WORLD and UK Today on News 24/One it would be extremely complicated, as if it were a 24-hour edition of The World Today.
- There will not be any further analogue terrestrial channels in the UK - Channel 5 was the last one.
- Differences in analogue/digital programming would simply confuse the viewer
- Broadcasting on analogue satellite would be an even bigger waste of BBC money - digital television is the way the future of television is heading, and the BBC have admitted this and taken steps towards this (i.e. BBC THREE/FOUR/TEXT etc)
If I think of any more I'll add them!

Most of your reasons are flawed.
The set has been revamped, that could be because of a possible merge.
Breakfast could go on BBC 1 only, whilst World today on world and 24
Adverts can be replaced with trailers or breakbumpers, or a 60 seconds like update from the interactive studio.
What would be the point of having it on terrestrial satellite??!
I, probably like many, only have digital satellite now, no need for analogue satellite! I'm quite contented with Sky Digital, no need for others such as Hotbird!

Asia, America, Australia, Canada....
BBC World is broadcast world wide, so if it was to merge with N24 and to become BBC News, why shouldnt it be broadcast to the same countries as BBC World...
Why is it so difficult for people to understand...?
I have heard no rumours at all. And in fact it would be AFAIK impossible to do this unless the government were to change the way that BBC World was funded (ie not from advertising) ...
programmes made by BBC News can and are shown on both channels but as to merging both ... it just won't happen.
BBC World is being given more funding rather than less at the moment.
I'd be very interested in knowing sources for this rumour .... it sounds like mischief making to me.

What about both channels being rebranded to BBC News.
Same graphix set and presentation, but just different news briefings.
N24 taking World News Updates throughout the dayas seperate programmes.
Both channels having breakfillers.
in essence, closer links and money saving ideas between the channels.
World and News 24 are fine the way they are at present. I don't see why they need to change it (well I do see why, but I don't like the idea much ).
I think us UK viewers should be able to watch BBC World. Whoever created a channel
in the UK
and disabled to
watch it in the UK?!

news 24 seems dated now, it needs a releaunch, bright fast zippy music like LDN, a distinctive corporate image, the idents look like a news bulletin rather than a news channel.
Also, the studio is too enclosed, we need more depth of view, show some activity.
have world news updates from the world studio, have 60 second updates from the upcomming interactive studio.
Sports news needs a new studio, make it part of the bbc sport studio, but in corporate colours with a view of the whole sports centre.
BBC World elements - Breakfiller, Countdown then ident, Stings for sports and business updates.
BBC News 24 is stale and needs a fresh look and zippy feel, still authorative, but bright and cheerfull presenters....
