Yes, I see what you mean about late bulletin Nicky, but I think the luchtime one would be a good idea. Either that or keep the 320 slot on BBC TWO at weekends.

Here, the only difference between weekdays and weekends is that there aren´t  morning and late night news programs. The main bulletins at 14:30/15:00 and at 20:30/21:00/21:30 last normally between half and one hour (they use between 10 and 15 minutes for sport news).

One thing I want to know is why at weekends can't BBC ONE take the ormat of Bank Holidays? 10 min summary at 1 followed by short regional round up, 20 min at 6 with main regional news, followed by 10 for 15/20 mins with regional round up? I think this would be much better, as I like to watch North West Today, but have to watch it in the early evening, and if you're out, you've missed it, full stop.

It is really annoying that the weekend news times change. I have more often missed the weekened news because of the time slot. If it was at the normal times of 1, 6 and 10 (as it is in other European countries like Spain), it would be more consistent and achieve better viewing figures I imagine.

This is what they should do (although if this has been mentioned already, please give me a digital kick in the stomach)...

BBC News at One/Six/Ten should be simulcasted on News24, with the One and Ten having an 'extra' segment exclusive to News24 viewers, while the regions opt out to their own news. This would fill the rest of the hour on n24.
The Six should be left the same on News24, but the regions/nations should have a way to override the News24 signal on cable/satellite to show the regional news on News 24.

As for weekend,  One/Six/Ten should be cut to 20 minutes, and have the regional news/UK Today at :20 into the show, without goin back to the main bulletin.

I dunno EXACTLY how UK Television news works... but it's just a suggestion. Please don't kill me Smile Sad Shocked

Not sure the simulcast options would work - and not sure if the regional opt-out things you mention are technically possible with digital.

But I agree with your suggestion that the One/Six and Ten should be at regular times through the weekend with maybe just 15 minutes and 5 mins of regional news at Six and Ten. They have the Ten O'Clock News six days a week (Sun - Fri) so why not Saturday as well?!

They aren't... Well not easily or cheaply, and News 24 is not designed for regional content. Can you imagine if a national story (like an explosion, plane crash etc) broke during a regional opt? You'd have to wait for all the regions to re-join before beginning to cover it (or have a really nasty crash in for regional viewers as they joined mid report)

The technical reasons are also pretty persuasive :

The BBC has only installed opt-out switching for BBC One digital on digital terrestrial in the English regions. It hasn't provided for BBC Two opts - the costs of both equipment and extra distribution circuits are pretty big (Believe it or not it costs more to distribute a digital signal you need to opt in/out of than one you are just passing on)

On satellite there is currently only really space for one News 24 feed. It would require another half transponder to just allow Scotland, Wales and N Ireland to opt-out, let alone the 10+ English regions (who don't even get opt-outs on BBC One on satellite currently!)
