I think it would be a good idea to run the news programmes on news 24 at weekends. They run breakfast at weekends (and even christmas day) so why not the 1, 6, 10. now some people will say that it is a 24hr news channel so there is no point but a programme is always more widely watched than a service. For example Sky News at ten is quite popular and i think it would help news 24 viewing figures. Sunday evening of course would not require a ten as it is carried on BBC One. What do you think??? Should they use N6 or just broadcast it from N8??? Perhaps use weekday presenters sometimes like Huw or Fiona, Maybe Sian but she is very good on Breakfast???

I think it's a good idea and it would be good if BBC News 24 started using more of the 'big name' newscasters from BBC 1. As has been mentioned in an earlier thread, this is probably where all of the BBC newscasters are heading anyway after analogue switch off and the possibility of subsequent cancellation of bulletins on BBC 1.

I'm not convinced this will work. Sky News at Ten works because no (well, very little) news breaks at that time of night and I'm also not sure that there would be enough news to fill a half hour bulletin at the weekends (well enough of relevance to people). I am, however, in favour of the 1, 6 and 10 being broadcast seven days a week but at the weekends for shorter periods.

Why they can't schedule the 1 on Saturdays and Sundays for ten minutes or so, with the Six for 15-20 mins and Ten for 15-20 mins is beyond me and yet obvious (if that makes sense) as programme schedulers can't play around as much!

And it seems obvious how much BBC Presentation don't like accommodating extra news as there were heated arguments when the Ten wanted a trailer one night and they weren't scheduled to have one on what was a busy and major news day.

Oh, and I think we are a long way from the end of scheduled bulletins - I can see them going on for years after analogue switch off.

As for presenters switching - can't see it myself. Most of the BBC main news team do not like News24 and see it draining resources from them. Most BBC presenters on One would not, as they see it, stoop so low!!

Why would you need a scheduled bulletin on BBC1 or ITV, when everybody would have access to BBC News 24, and potentially Sky News, ITN News Channel or a potential ITV News Channel ?

Huw edwards, Sian williams, George allagiah. they have all done news 24. Chris lowe used to regularly present the six and he anchors weekends on news 24 so they cant see it as that bad or low.

I think the weekend news coming from News24 is inevitable isn't it ?
All news channels get great viewing figures at the weekends - they always have. And if you dont scan the papers or the Radio Times you could well miss BBC News on a Saturday or a Sunday. I bet you however that it doesn't happen until after the transmitters are switched off and we all HAVE to go digital, then with more and more people watching News24, the BBC will think seeing News24 at 10 o'clock on BBC 1 won't scare the children. News24 is SO much better than what's on offer on BBC 1 anyway. Razz:

No, they start there - but that is the point. It's a stepping stone... Also scheduled bulletins I think will stay because people want to be told what is going on at set times with familiar faces on familiar channels. They also, I think, would not watch news bulletins if there was something more interesting on and having it on main channels takes away this option - so people will watch - and certainly the BBC will want this (as it has to) but ITV probably won't and will scrap it's bulletins quicker.

That's only my point of view though!

I don't agree with that - News24 tries to be the 1,6 and 10 every hour which is not what a rolling news service should be. And, in my opinion, BBC News at 1, 6 and 10 are far superior to News24 - and this should be so as they have so many more people dedicated and working on them.

How can it be a stepping stone if chris lowe appears there more than on BBC News at six where he started. I would think news 24 gets the same amount of attention as national bulletins.

No, I would think it would be seen as a demotion to present on News 24 than on a BBC 1 bulletin. I don't think Chris Lowe would be asked to present the 6 O'Clock now.

I agree with Steve that ITV will probably dump their scheduled bulletins before the BBC if an ITV News Channel becomes reality. News does not get good ratings for ITV1.
