Interesting article on www.brandrepublic.com/bulletins/media/article/492667/bbc-one-ditch-wheelchair-ethnic-minority-idents-/ suggesting that the BBC ARE infact thinking of reprising the globe image across all its channels......not just BBC1.

I'd contend that much of that article is no more factual than the basis for the starting of this thread.

Fair enough!

If the BBC wanted in-vision announcers then it's wouldn't really be that difficult to build a studio. Such a studio wouldn't have to be that big or complicated.
It does depend on space in the Broadcast Centre, though, and the first floor is pretty much full as it is.

The con booths attatched to the BBC One and BBC Two playout areas are a little larger than the others though; and I was told that this was to leave room for a camera.

IVC would be highly unlikely, if for no other reason, because many con announcements are now automated. Possibly prime-time could be done IV, but would an ident preceed or follow the con, or even appear at all?

I thought it was impossable to do a clock with the diffrent delays in D-Sat, DTT and D-Cable.

Hi Dave. The clock was used on both analogue and digital for several years. The delays between analogue and digital platforms is essentially meaningless.

Nobody seriously set their watch by the BBC 1 clock expecting it to be accurate to the millisecond; and even if they did it probably wouldn't have been a matter of life and death that the clock on digital was slightly slow (I'm not being sarcastic honest, I know the argument you mention has been used before).

If the people who used that argument tried to use it as a reason to get rid of the GTS (pips) on Radio 4, it wouldn't wash.

There is no reason why a clock cannot be used as a visual presentation device.

Yes, but wasn't it 'chucked' in the first place due to the satallite differences? Besides, the BBC always go the full length in terms of its accuracy, so in their eyes, showing a clock on 17:59:57 when it is actually 18:00:00 on DSat is, to them, probably a big deal. With no clock, they do not show themselves to be inaccurate in any way, and this is the most likely way that the Beeb prefer it.

So why doesn't that fact apply to BBC radio then?

I tend not to listen to BBC Radio, so I can't really comment on that.

Fair enough but BBC radio is on exactly the same platforms as TV (if not more - DAB/online) and the national stations still relay the pips each hour quite happily. You could extend the analogy to a newsreader saying it's "6:14" - what if they say that within a couple of seconds of the minute changing? Technically, it may be still 6.13 for some!

I just believe it's because it's seen as an outdated and formal approach into the news...and in the case of some BBC local regions during the balloon era, hard to cue sometimes Very Happy

Actually, some of us didn't Wink I sat on the fence, as is the appropriate response to anything like this. Unless you work at the BBC and know what's actually being talked about behind the scenes (and I don't), you can't say you're 100% certain that this won't happen. Anybody should be careful to not put all their faith rumour on the internet. So, sit on the fence.

I will add that I'm about 98% on the side of 'It's rubbish'. The other 2% of me is fighting for it though! I'd love to see the clock and globe come back. As has been said above, the clock gives a much more formal introduction to the news.

Does anyone remember the BBC THREE 'show in-between the shows' thing? I can't remember it's name but it was more or less in-vision continuity...

No. As I pointed out before, the clock was in use on Digital platforms for several years before being 'chucked'.

He's on about when they had a group of people on a sofa, doing links and interviews like T4 every evening. It was terrible, and used a lot of pointless tracking shots which just made me personally feel dizzy Very Happy
