A personal observation ...

Does anyone else feel that the need to show off the special effects and filming techniques at the end of these programmes, as done recently on 'Nature's Special Events' and debuted on 'Planet Earth' isn't necessary and devalues from the spectacle shown in the programme?

It has aspects of boasting 'aren't we clever'

A special one off at the end of the series would in my opinion be much much better. This kind of information perhaps should be left to the DVD release of the series too.

I suspect it's purpose is to fill the UK TV version up to an hour, where the commercially shown version in overseas markets would be shown with the space padded by commercials.

I think the 'making of' section is about 10 minutes, so I think that is it's purpose. Probably also works out being far more effective than having to film 10 minutes of nature footage which can take several months only to cut it in commercial versions.

I've got Planet Earth on Blu-ray and all the episodes are only 50 minutes, yet the DVD release has the 'making of' segments at the end of each one which bumps each episode up to an hour.

Again as said, it's probably more for international use, or makes it less irritating when they show them on UKTV.

You could always switch off your TV after 50 minutes Wink

Or get HD. BBC HD don't show them, as the 'making of' bits are in SD.
