I think it's great the way the newsroom can be adapted for different programmes and can completely change colour and feel - also very useful (and money-saving). I do hope the new News 24 set can be changed in the same way.
One thing that is slightly strange about it though, is the stage at the back. It's almost as if the back projectors could be used for a presentation with someone standing in front, like the Sky Newswall. Only problem is the desk would be in the way...

I think during the war they had a drop down graphic on the middle screen and used it in vision with Huw while he was still sitting at the desk

Yep - a virtual "roller blind"!
If you read my posts higher up you will see that one of the reasons that the projector screens are a different colour is that the ones at the back are not designed to be lit from the front. If you stood a presenter in front, a la Sky's Newswall (which is made up of lots of small, very bright projector cubes, rather than one large projector) you'd need to light them - and the back wall would wash out...
Also - in BBC One bulletin terms it would break the geography and branding of the set to suddenly replace the newsroom (which is supposed to "be there" in the eye/mind of the viewer) with a graphic. The Ten illustrated middle panel worked because it was anchored in the middled of the newsroom - like a drop down panel - if you converted the whole wall it would look quite different - and of course you'd have problems with the mirrors at either end...

I think it was very clever of the BBC to create a studio that could be completely changed for each show, multi-purpose.
