I only hope that when BBC Birmingham's move to The Mailbox is complete, the situation with MidTdy will improve vastly. (It certainly can't get much worse!)
Having been into B'ham about a week ago, I can tell you that the Carlton building in Gas Street and The Mailbox building are about 2 minutes walk from each other and can be easily seen from each other, looking diagonally along/across the city's canal.
The bit of The Mailbox that will house the BBC is near the back of the building (nearest the canal) and currently is boarded up. The boarding is covered in pics of television programmes they make (e.g. MidTdy, Doctors, CountryFile...) and also some radio station logos (BBC WM, BBC Asian Network). The background color of the design on the boarding is black, and is domited by a huge logo: [ B] [ B ] [ C ] Birmingham

Q1. Does anyone know why the astons are ever so slightly transparent and a strange colour which doesn't match the BBC News standard, any other region the set or the programme titles?
Q2. Why is the weather presenter placed so close to the desk when there is such a _huge_ area of fake-wood floor and walls behind the sports present who sits on the right hand end of the desk in the pic above?
Q3. Why is the studio so poorly lit? Specifically, why is that gobo on the wall in such a bright orange? It's random! It messes with the story images behind the presenters!
Q4. Why is the live 'window' behind the desk smaller than any of the other region's 'windows'?
Q5. Why does the 'window' show a live view of the trees outside Pebble Mill even during the 20:30 broadcast when it shows up as a fuzzy shade of dark blue?
I could go on but my complaints about the use of the plasma screens alone would fill a whole new thread! If anyone has any answers for the above, I'd be delighted to hear them.
Thanks,
Peter.
A1: It's probably transparent because the vision mixer hasn't set up the keying correctly. As for the colour, who knows. It might be a phase error? Brum are still an analogue chain!
A2: Don't they sit in front of the plasma? It's probably due to the lighting - you need space between objects you don't want lit
A3: I think the floor looks good - gives a real 'mood' to the set. As for the gobos, I've never understood that either - think the bod on lighting needs an eye test
A4: Cost? They're spending loads on the new building, and broadcast projectors cost loadsa money
A5: Would you rather see Lap Land? Sorry!
Cost again I suppose. For a camera to be placed elsewhere they'd need to lay cabling

Oh, while talking about projectors, watch out for Sky News's videowall!
As it's a 24hr station, they won't have time to line up the cubes. They're really just expensive TV's stuck together. Over time, the colours & blacks will drift.

now i know mtday doesnt only get on my nerves - cos the ratings tell a different story. i hope central give them a run for their money with the new look - bbc bham need to realise, lack of investment means lack of viewers!
and im glad someone else has noticed all those niggling mistakes they make with graphics etc - and btw - does any one know why the 'window behind them looks **** ? is it because theyre very close to it - or is it a cheaper model - or a poor camera resolution?
does anyone else remember them using the unused part of the studio - except for 'its your call' and one midlands report a while ago?
if i were in charge i would get rid of smeena ali khan, alison marsh, shefali oza, liz munro, liz copper to name a few (some are so bad its like watching L!VE tv sometimes - though thats closed now)
there is so much to moan about on midlands today - but i will conrol myself - btw does anyone know any details of when theyre moving - and will they be going non-generic like BBC London is?

I always laugh when Midlands Today mention they won 'The Best Regional News Bulletin' award. Makes them sound so grand doesn't it
How did they get that? Suppose the panel watched before branding!
The unfortunate thing is, I know one of the Directors who does it. I've often thought about telling him, but he's too much of a nice bloke & he'd be really offended. Besides, he'll probably stop getting the rounds in! ha ha

Yes definately get rid of that Alison Marsh.
She presented the weather while Shefali was away - messed it up.
She became a reporter - messed it up.
She now presents the sport section - she messes it up!
Plus she has a really annoying voice. Is she the producer's girlfriend or something? Apart from that I don't mind the lass!

God, Shefali Oza's changed! Has she 'done a Paul Hudson' and taken time off?
The lady in question is Lorna Bailey, who normally stands in Shefali, when she's off.
Lorna normally works for BBC Radio WM, notably between 5 & 7 on Saturday mornings, with Geoff Foster (BBC WM(Coventry) sports presenter).
(For the record, BBC WM (Coventry) is the former BBC CWR/BBC Coventry & Warwickshire operation rebranded.
Was this a bright idea of Keith Beech's (The recently new Managing Editor), or his predecessor?
From the 8/10, according to WM's website, they will have their own Late Show, with Shabina Aktar, instead of the regional Alex Trellinski one. Does this have anything to do with the increased sport output on the station.
This means now, apart from 2 hours on Saturday evening, & the 5 live overnight show, WM goes it alone completley!
Does anyone know if Alex is continuing with his show on the other stations, because when Shabina sat in for Paul Franks, a few months ago, on the breakfast show, she 'did my head in' with her 'gabbling'.
I'd rather listen to Alex anyway!)
