I think that's a different situation, it was on its last legs by the time it came off BBC Two. I don't think Five promoted it a great deal from what I recall, could be wrong. Weird to think about it but somehow robots fighting each other lost its appeal over time!
They did promote it a lot, billboards and everything, but you're right in saying it wasn't poached because the Beeb had officially axed it. And it died on C5 because they didn't change anything about it so it was the same show that was declining on the Beeb.
Remember when there was some doubt over Paul's position a few years ago after the revelations over his personal life? As I understand it Mary told producers that if he was forced out then she would follow. I hope he returns that loyalty.
the only chance Bake Off now has on C4 is being able to stamp a new brand through a totally new team - having Paul as a legacy hangover would leave it half in the old world, half in the new - not really knowing what it's identity is.
