And so the biscuit starts to crumble... It worries me that Grade might have a very valid point about Channel 4's potential privatisation.

So it's already not the same show. Appears ITV stayed clear of this one knowing that if you can't get the existing line up on board that you don't have the same show and there will be an ensuing toxic backlash for destroying what has become a bit of an institution.

This could backfire very badly for Channel 4.
A lot of questions could be asked about its governance if they've essentially spent £75m on a tent and kitchen equipment.

Beyond stupid,
No exuse now against privatisation ,
Michael Grade has chipped in, saying Channel 4 have "shot themselves in the foot" by snagging Bake Off, as it undermines its arguments against privatisation:

Various people on Twitter:
Fair point. I'd say Mary & Paul are very very slightly more critical to the format than Mel & Sue, but you only have to look at the Comic / Sport Relief specials to see how it struggles without them.
So if the tent has lost its pegs (vital but new ones might stop it collapsing), will it loose it's frame?

Note to channel controllers: If you're going to spend a small fortune nicking another channels top show.....at least make sure the talent is on board first.
It could be a bigger disaster for Channel 4 more than anybody. They've just, potentially, put the final nail in their own coffin and spent 25 million quid doing so. For a tent. If they can keep hold of Mary & Paul too I suspect the BBC might eventually come out of this laughing. They've certainly got the public's backing on this one (for once).
