No, because it's bullcrap. The BBC have lost the London Paralympics but not the Olympics. As for the World Cup, it is a A-List event and must remain on terrestrial television. I can't imagine ITV affording the whole lot on their own, nor C4 or Five putting up enough capital to cover it in the way the BBC do.

Although I'm sure Murdoch and co. will be pushing their anti-BBC vendetta further and calling for them to be stripped of rights for daring to be an independent broadcaster and ask the same questions before the World Cup selection as the Murdoch press are not just asking - but also answering with the word "FIXED!" the day after England failed so miserably even they struggle to lay the blame solely at the BBC's door.

Murdoch COULD do something clever, and say he could provide coverage, IE using his slots on free view, thus, Sky 3 could be used for world cup.

When it comes to events such as the Olympics and the World Cup the content owners generally require the broadcasts to be made available to the vast majority of the population. They aren't too bothered about the channels being free-to-air on satellite or not, they just want to make it available to a large possible audience. In most countries the channels that show the Olympics and the World Cup are encrypted on satellite and you usually only need an encryption card to view it.

There is a possibility that the content owners don't care about the minority who cannot see Sky 3, which are mostly people with only "Freeview Lite" or Freesat (analogue terrestrial viewers will be extinct by the time this becomes relevant).

Surely by 2012 switchover will be completed anyway, hence everyone will have the Freeview channels, or will it complete later in 2012, after the olympics?

The exact dates for the switchovers in 2012 haven't been announced but I'm pretty sure that there will still be some analogue in August 2012. At the time of the announcement of London 2012 there were calls for DSO in London to be delayed until after the Olympics

BBC UK, but then also TVE said that England had won the world cup bid and they hadnt. Would be good if BBC lost them, not to keen on the BBC!
