That was the reason given by them. Of all their brands Granada is the name with the longest history and most recognised, both in the UK and abroad. They'd be very silly inded to scrap it and come up with some random word to brand all their programmes.

But it wouldn't be a random word, it would be 'ITV', the 50 year old company that is now the majority holder, that is known on screen, and the brand that has connected every regional company for years.

I can't believe the BBC has a whole page on it's website about where a BBC logo should be on the titles and what size, what colour, it can't have a shadow - it just smells of a complete waste of money to me.....

Yeah like the logo used on the Top of the Pops intro - which jumps on and off the screen in full TOTPesq colours...

itv is a 50 year old network. itv network ltd (or whatever it was called) appeared a couple of years ago, and itv plc appeared after the merger of carlton and granada.

the itv companies have always exported programmes under their own names. their reputations and relationships with foreign broadcasters were not developed as "itv" but as separate companies. anglia's natural history programmes were not seen as coming from "itv", but from "anglia".

itv is virtually unknown abroad, the old company names are not.

But 'ITV' isn't as well known as 'Granada' in production terms - 'ITV' has never made programmes. When they go off and try and sell programmes to other countries where the 'ITV' name isn't well known, they would have had to build up the brand 'ITV'. On the other hand 'Granada' is known and respected the world over.and has a long history of making quality programmes - The only other brands that have the same long term reputation internationally are the BBC and Thames

As mentioned earlier the issue of 'ITV' making programmes for other broadcasters is also an issue

So why on earth have they called the damm network ITV??? Why not stick with their guns and call it Granada??

Or why not use this new merger to actually link things and become one ITV as they said they would! For example, is there any harm in the production side of it being called ITV Granada or Granada ITV? That way the brand could build, people would associate it with Granada and then in a few years it could be dropped.

ITV never made programmes, because it was just the collective name for many regional companies. Now though it is a network, it is a company, it's a business, it should be the one making the programmes.

And as for the other channels rubbish, everyone still associates Granada with ITV in this country, so it's exactly the same, and it never made any difference to people in Manchester, etc when their region was tagged onto the end of a programme.

No body ever seems to complain about any other broadcasters doing it.

Surely going back to my point, Granada ITV for a production company should be used.

Like who? It's not as if there are a lot of precedents out there.

The BBC don't have a diffrent name for their production business, but then they only make programmes for themself, UKTV and S4C. Channel 4 and five don't make anything. Sky make virtually nothing except five news and their own branded programmes and all other broadcasters are too small to produce anything except Flextech and their channels aren't called 'Flextech' any way.

ITV are unique in being both a broadcaster and major producer for the whole of the rest of the industry

True, yet at the moment, not so. As ITV are the broadcaster and Granada are the producer, If you didn't know, you may just think that they are an independant who make a lot of shows for ITV.
As outside of the North West Granada is just a producer or an endcap!

I'm sure that the end of today's wonderful and powerful programme Ahead of The Class, had an endcap ending with for ITV, it's a bit pointless to mention, but was nice to see.

for ITV, not BY them.

They called it ITV because it's a brand the British people know. It's not known outside britisn though because it's always been a concept not a real channel.
