This afternoon, i've been watching my Chewin' the Fat DVDs and noticed that there was no BBC logo in the opening titles of Series 1 but in Series 3 there is. Now I was just wondering, why did the BBC choose to put their logo into the opening titles of every programme since a few years back and what is everyone's opinion on it?

Is it actually a BBC production? Because sometimes the Beeb are restricted from whacking their logo over the titles by the production company who made it, as it's not actually a product of the BBC. This happened, I believe, with The Royle Family (a Granada production for the BBC) - series 1 & 2 had no logo, but series 3 did.
Well Chewin' the Fat is made by the Comedy Unit and I'm not sure if they didn't want it in Series 1 (and possible 2. I've not watched that series yet) but does anyone know when the BBC introduced putting the logo on to the opening titles?

I think it was just after the 1997 rebrand. I first noticed it over the Top Gear titles and thought ... "uh??".
It doesn't matter whether the programme is produced by the BBC or not. Placement of the BBC logo during the title sequence is a requirement of the commissioning process.
Indeed, 1997 - and part of the reason was because of the increase in BBC programmes being shown on the UKTV channels ... a way of getting BBC branding onto a channel that couldn't be called a BBC channel.

Really? How clever!
Do they also leave them on for programmes that they may sell around the world?
How many other companies add these? The only similar thing is the HBO sting before the programmes that I can thing of. I wonder why ITV have never done this, with programmes on Plus and Paramount, it's not like them to miss a trick!

Well even though ITV is known for the generic credits etc ITV can be quite loose with their branding. Notice how ITV is the only terrestrial channel that allows the production company a full screen endcap with no other logos whatsoever
