Streaming radio stations is an expensive business, and I'm really not convinced licence payers' money couldn't be put to better use than allowing us to listen to Roger Whittaker and phone-ins on jam from Devon.

I think I'm right in saying that you a licensed broadcaster which pays PRS for its FM/AM transmissions can stream without paying additional PRS fees. Sporting rights are another matter though

Yes, which means local stations can't opt the Internet stream to something else, without more rights issues. It has to be the exact standard output, minus any sport they don't have the rights for.

Could it be that Leicester are the only station with a 'listen again' feature because they play host to the Asian Network, who obviously have a major internet operation?

Sports coverage will be a major issue, but not for all sports. BBC Radio Swindon have recently been streaming their Speedway coverage live online.

BBC London 94.9 have one - but then again, they are the odd one out really and already have live streaming as well.

Yes, they have since the launch of London Live. It's far easier for London to be streamed than most other stations due its studios being not far from the infrastructure that streams the national stations

On my Broadcast Now newsletter I get e-mailed to me, I noticed that it reported that all the BBC local radio stations are to be streamed on the Internet, so that people can listen to them as they use their computers. Has anyone else heard this, and will any of you use this facility?

If it happens, the first programme I'll listen to is 'Peter Levy Requests' on BBC Radio Leeds. I am SO predictable aren't I?

How about Mr Doolan on BBC WM ?

He, along with Tony Butler, has got to be one of the most known about local broadcasters from the Midlands, that national people know about !

Mind you, I doubt I'd use the facility much anyway. I only catch a certain early morning presenter(cough, see my current sig !) & the first bit of the Late Show normally.

BTW Welcome back Kath !

As I said moments ago in this thread, I know the figures to do this, and it is not as much as you think or claim.

Football is the only problem - the BBC only owns the broadcast but not online rights to football league.

Rugby/Speedway/cricket is all going to be streamed (by the way, if you heard the speedway, it came from the computer on my desk!)

Radio Leicester have listen again because of pro-active staff ... not because of any 'network' reasons. The other Where I Live staff members resource and dedicate time to other activities.

What, more BBC services allowed to be available for FREE to a worldwide audience?

I honestly think that the BBC are opening themselves up to a serious court case soon.

How can the government justify a legally binding licence fee when they are providing it's services for free to a worldwide audience?

Absolutely agree. It's probably being done so a BBC Executive on a jolly up to some exotic place can 'keep up with events with the BBC'.

You're incorrigible, aren't you? Please change the bloody record.

I am all for a sensible debate on these things, but I really fail to understand people like you who seem to whip themselves into such an angry, bitter frenzy about anything involving the BBC.

And, yes, before you ask, I pay my licence fee. And I bet I'm on a lower income than you.
