There's lots of things we all pay for which we don't use - I don't use schools or the roads.... but I have to pay for them. I don't take a state pension either, but I don't complainabout giveing some of my wages to those who do
The license fee ensures that we have a top class radio, TV and online service not under the governance of advertising and the economic climate. Whats more it provides its services without constant interruption by adverts.
They will never go subscription, as they know they will get a big reduce in money, and wont be able to take their staff out on trips with OUR money. Its about time it went Subscription or Commercial, then see how it competes with Sky ITV and others.
As a BBC employee I'd really like to know where all these free trips are as I've never heard of them let alone go on one.
If the BBC suddenly turned to advertising it would cause huge problems for the commercial broadcasters. Take Radio 4 and Radio 2 for example.... advertisers would fall over themselves to advertise on those channels - ditto programmes like Newsnight or EastEnders. There's only so much money to go round and if a large proportion of that money was suddenly switched to the BBC the comemrcial channels would be in big trouble.
It would also mean that eventually all minority-audience programming would disappear form TV as everything would have to make money

Why should we be forced to pay out over a hundred pounds every year? People who dont want the BBC, shouldnt have to pay, and we wont get their services.

Yes, but have you seen the standard of the programming on Sky Digital? the vast majority of the channel (from Sky and others) is either bought from the US or bought from UK programme libraries and most of the live or original programming is either teleshoping or being funded by text message

With sky you subscribe. and it's your choice if you do that or not. surly it would be better for the public if the Beeb were to become a subscription only service giving the country a choice.

Good, Im sure Eastenders and Holy City would survive (sadly)
becuase it would'nt be a problem getting companys adversting in them
But im also sure Only Fools & Horses repeats and Little Britain could survive aswell. So who cares if the make-over and reality tv crap would disapear GOOD RIDDANCE

Yes, because ITV, Channels 4&5 and Sky - all commercially funded channels - are really free of make-over and reality shows aren't they?

The standard of the programming Sky owned channels put out is Vastly improving. infact the quality is close to becoming better than what the BBC put out.
Their was a point to the TV licence ten-twenty years ago, when the BBC was 50% of the UK Television market. But this is the Multi channel era, A lot of people HAVE to pay the BBC just to watch all the channels that are aviailable on the SKY Digital & Cable TV Platforms. THAT IS NOT ON.
But try explaining THAT to some of the members around here who orgasm at the sight of the BBC logo.

Actualy i am saying Most of teh Skows on Sky ran Channels are of superb quality (Compared to two-three years ago). I Never mentioned Flextech.
Sky One has Tones of great shows (Imports / home grown). Have you seen BSG it's commisioned by sky and is one Hell of a program. Ten times better than the Dross thet BBC shows (I.E. Eastenders).
But this isn't about the quality of SKY, this is about how people are HAVING to pay the BBC when they watch otehr channels more often.

Well most of them are radio stations and you can't watch a radio station.
In my house teh stations teh tv are tuned to most are Sky one, Sky's movie channels, Sky Sports, FX289, The wrestling channel, and Bid TV / Price-Drop. and for radio Forth One, Forth Two or real radio.
The TV is very Rarely on A BBC Channel. infact this is the same for most people i know.
But, to the point, Why should I be forced to pay the BBC for the right to watch Television when I don't even watch the ruddy channels the BBC have!

Well you must lead a very sad life if you watch the Wrestling Channel and FX289 over the quality from the BBC. And don't criticise me for writing 'watch' instead of 'watch/interact/listen', you know what I mean. I can now criticise you for several errors, mis-typing 'the' twice, no capitals on 'TV', full stops in the place of commas and so on.

is it possible to compare the bbc with sky and itv? do they perform the same function? the bbc is far more than bbc one and two.
do you think bskyb, itv plc, flextech or any other commercial organisation could provide the same breadth of services to the public that the bbc can - because of the unique way it is funded? impartiality from commercial pressures is as important as impartiality from government.
the bbc isnt perfect, but i dont think anyone is saying it is.
