As Armando Iannuchi puts it, the BBC needs to defend itself more and "find someone to articulately tell James Murdoch to **** off".

There is, but this isn't made by the BBC. It's just something a third party has made which uses the BBC News RSS feed. It looked a bit cheap and nasty from what I remember.

Personally, I think that anybody with an iPhone, Blackberry or Google phone can already access all the BBC's news content via their mobile browser. Developing apps to display the content in a mobile friendly format is of benefit to the readers, and as the head of the BBC's "future media development" has said, the audience "want to access the digital services that they have paid for at a time and place that suits them".

This hits the nail right on the head. The existance or lack thereof of a BBC News app won't stop iPhone users from reading BBC News on their iPhone. Having a BBC News app would just allow them to access it in a more small-screen friendly format.

There is no common sense reason for the BBC to be kept out of this market. RTÉ has launched a free news app and when it works it works great.

The probable compromise, of course, will be for the BBC Trust to authorise an app but to stipulate if be launched by BBC Worldwide and be paid-for.

Not sure about that... I suspect BBC Management will resist any form of payment for access to basic services that already exist. It would be like charging for iPlayer wouldn't it?

Worldwide have a role domestically for merchandising and for revenue generation from pre-recorded media sales.

Common sense prevails. BBC iPhone apps have been given the go-ahead by the BBC Trust. A BBC News app will be available later today.

BBC News posted:
A BBC News app for the iPhone and iPad will be available in the UK from late afternoon on 23 July, the BBC has announced.

The free-to-download apps for Apple products were originally due to be made available in April 2010.

Good. Never understood the argument of the newspapers and commercial broadcasters.
