Hi everyone, I 've just reinstalled ny freeview box, after an alert came up on the screen saying there was a new channel. Everything installed perfectly, and this new channel BBC HD1installed. I know what it is, high-def tv etc but its just coming up with a back screen when i go to view it. I have a HD ready tv and so just assumed that its off air, but when I went onto information it said there was a movie running....could someone explain why i can't see anything?

You not only need to have an HD-Ready TV, you also need to have an HD receiver to decode the HD signal properly. A 'normal' Freeview box will probably be able to see the channel information to tell you what is being broadcast, but won't be able to decode the broadcast stream.
A bit like non Top Up TV receivers being able to show you the channel name but not show you the picture because it hasn't got the ability to decode the signal.

If Digital Spy is to be beleived and the original poster is in London, then he may well get access to HD through his regular freeview box.

Digital Spy article.

I confess I only scan read the above, so I am prepared to be corrected if wrong.

Ok, I stand corrected:

Quote:
"The DTT HD trial will be a closed technical test available only to the triallists. Londoners with Freeview boxes will see the test channels listed in their onscreen menu, but will not be able to access them. The DTT trial will enable the broadcasters to test technical delivery of HD on Freeview and to understand how the audience values HD programming."

BBC HD1 may well appear as a service in the EPG of regular Freeview boxes, however you will not get pictures, and may not get audio (as it is Dolby Digital not MPEG audio)

The actual broadcasts are free-to-air and unencrypted (as are the satellite equivalents) - but the equipment to receive them is not widely available. (Satellite receivers are available - but HD "Freeview" boxes aren't)

However using a PC it is possible to record and view the streams on both the DVB-T and DVB-S platforms - but you need an insanely fast computer and video card to get real-time smooth replay.

I'm watching the HD service via DVB-T (so it isn't "closed" to me!) using my PC and Freeview capture card - but get less than 10 fps at the moment. Pictures do look lovely though!

I notice that BBC HD channel still hasn't appeared on Sky EPG 145. Has there been a problem with it on DSat? It was supposed to appear on Tuesday, but DigitalSpy has now changed it to "imminent" Shocked

I was just going to ask the exact same - I'd love to see the quality, and maybe compare the two.

What's with the aspect ratio on them? Are they a little squished down - that'd explain the odd-shaped square boxes on the BBC logo.

Not sure if I'm correct here or not, but it's testing so you can only access the channel through the 'Add Channels' feature

It'll be on the Sky EPG soon enough.
