there is some pre-filtering (like frame-line-offset line-averaging in 1080/4320p based cameras) for instance.

Does that mean "they blur it a little bit"? Wink

David

Not exactly Wink But sort of Wink

They usually take the average of two pairs of lines from a frame to create the half-line field, but alter the line-pairings by one frame-line each field. This does a vertical (but not horizontal pre-filter), and also does a simple noise-reduction (which is why shooting interlaced often buys you a stop of sensitivity AIUI)

So :
For Field 1
Line 1 + 2 -> Field line 1
Line 3 + 4 -> Field line 2
Line 5 + 6 -> Field line 3

For Field 2
Line 2 + 3 -> Field line 1
Line 4 + 5 -> Field line 2
Line 6 + 7 -> Field line 3

Of course a 25p capture with a 1/50th shutter would have significant motion blur, but you could chose to use a different shutter. .. Doing the same at 576/50i won't help you get around the degradation to 288p...

But choosing a different shutter for 25p that reduced the blur would only make it judder more - and 25p already judders a lot more than 50Hz content.

Yes - but it's a production choice like any other. You kind of have to separate the transmission medium from the capture medium to a degree. It's another thing to add to the complexity of the system.

I return to my original point though - you can't 'average' HD and SD - they don't exist in isolation. (Increasingly SD is sourced HD)

Is it just me who thinks this 3D business is a waste of time and money, particularly for the BBC who need to reduce costs? I don't think 3D adds anything spectacular to the viewing experience - if anything having to wear stupid glasses makes it worse. Am I also being a bit stereotypical when I say that Strictly's audience is probably an older demographic (certainly in comparison to The X Factor) and such gimmicks won't appeal to them? Considering I'm in my twenties and dislike 3D, I don't think my mother in her fifties will be watching Strictly with funny glasses on.

You could get an auto-stereoscopic (glasses-free) HDTV when they come out (usually with multiple viewpoints) - or the generation of 3D after that that could be true 3D Smile that wouldn't have the accommodation-convergence conflict caused by current stereoscopic 3D.

Suspect that, like Wimbledon, the 3D stuff won't cost the BBC much at all...

The BBC are exactly the people who should be using their resources to develop and experiment with new technologies, just like they have throughout their history.

Fairly often, there's a trailer on BBC HD for "Later ... with Jools Holland", that always ends with the slogan that says the
show is "lovingly crafted for high definition. Ironically, the edition of "Later ... " on BBC HD right now, looks upscaled.

Bit of an odd one - American Dad showing in 4:3 HD. Not a first for BBC HD as there was that new transfer of Civilisation earlier this year, but odd considering the latest series of Family Guy was 16:9.

That'll be because, contrary to what the EPG may tell you, they've actually just started on Season 5 (*not* 6), which only went 16:9 HD from episode 10.
