I live in the States, and almost every single channel is available in High-Definition. We had ESPN in HD since 2004. We even had the first ever HD broadcast-a Space Shuttle launch- in 1999!

Sorry - that's not correct.

Japan was running a proper satellite HD service (using their analogue MUSE transmission system and an early version of what became 1080i - then called HiVision) throughout the 1990s, with test transmissions in the late 80s. I think they were up to 8 hours a day of HD using MUSE by 1992 - and for most of the 90s NHK had an HD production truck based in Europe to cover events here in HD (as very few other companies had HD facilities). The BBC and NHK (the Japanese equivalent of the BBC) produced a drama series in HD HiVision in 1989 called "The Ginger Tree" starring Samantha Bond ISTR.

The BBC and other European broadcasters were also broadcasting HD test transmissions using the digitally assisted analogue component HD-MAC system in the early 90s - with both the Albertville 1992 and Barcelona 1992 Winter and Summer Olympics being covered in HD (1152i). I watched BBC HD test recordings in the late 80s and early 90s - including stuff done at Wimbledon.

ISTR that the US (closely followed by Australia) launched their HD digital OTA platforms in 1998 - though initially most content was SD upconverted and it took a long time for some stations to add digital transmissions alongside their analogue services.

ISTR that the US Shuttle coverage you mention was in 1998, and was the first US HDTV broadcast via a regular OTA scheduled service, though earlier US HD test broadcasts had taken place throughout the 1990s.

... an historical diversion.

This SF Videoplayer clip covers the Montreux Jazz Festival HD tests in 1991.

I know Sky Arts HD have shown some very old Montreux stuff in HD (with tubed cameras sticking all over the place on speculars) as that was one of the first European events shot in HD (I think it was usually in the Japanese HiVision 1125/60i standard which became 1080i)

Interesting that SF state that this was the first Japanese-standard production in Europe. I can't remember what year I saw NHK HD cameras at Wimbledon - I suspect it was 1991 or 1992 - when there were also European HD cameras using the 1250/50i standard (which was 1152/50i in "new money")

The Ginger Tree was broadcast before it - though shot in the Japanese HiVision 1125/60i format and mainly on location in Japan (though some stuff may have been on location in the UK?) - and "We Return You To The Studio" was shot by the BBC on the Eureka 1250 1250/50i format (2x625) and broadcast also in 1990 (I remember watching it - letterboxed 16:9 and VERY aliasy) around the time of IBC (which was still in Brighton)

More details on p.10 of Eng Inf (which I think I still have a paper copy of) :

Was this list published before or after Kristian Digby died considering they've chosen an episode of Hole in the Wall featuring him?

And secondly, why on earth is money wasted making Hole in the Wall in HD? Or SD come to that matter!

FYI
A replacement Hole in the Wall has now been substituted for the original in the list of choices.

Has anyone ever seen the audio sync test on BBC HD during the morning?

Sorry if its been mentioned, just had the BBC HD Preview on and an ident came up saying "BBC HD audio sync test follows. Normally programming resumes in 2 minutes."

Then a black and white screen came up with moving white bars to test if the video was in sync with the audio. Never seen anything like this before but I guess its actually quite common, or would have been common anyway.

It's been there for well over a year now. It alternates each hour with the testcard.

The BBC HD blog has a very informative post on how to use the test card and sync test to make sure your TV is set up correctly:

Does anyone know (or want to hazard a guess) why Mitchell and Webb has been dropped in favour of Jam and Jerusalem?

I was wondering that myself, although M&W appeared at 12.05am, again last week there was a late schedule change with Shooting Stars following Jonathan Ross.

Who's the guy presenting the "lovingly crafted" featurettes? (Shaun the Sheep, Later with Jools, etc) Is he off t'wireless?
