What I find interesting is the logo after form-up: it goes "<HD> BBC" ala the 1991-1997 BBC2 idents. I thought branding had made that sort of thing verboten...

...And ala the BBC1 ident of the same time, too Wink

But yes, it is an odd thing to do - selecting a style slightly more akin to 17 years ago alongside channels which do not remotely have that same style; it doesn't help the BBC's overally inconsistent branding of their portfolio of channels in relation to each other - in '91 there may have been just two Beeb channels, but at least they complimented each other perfectly!

I notice that the dog is back to the old semi-transparent version today. Either the peak-white one has been withdrawn, or it was a cock-up...

The screen grab of the BBC HD Preview logo is of the semi-transparent graphic. All day yesterday BBC HD - when in non-Preview mode - had a bright white logo, which normally only accompanies trails.

All the BBC channels have the BBC logo on - that's enough, when it comes down to it.

The rigid branding at the time of the new logo was probably necessary for really enforcing it, but was overkill (compare the then-current 2s with the old BBC logo and then with the rather larger BBC TWO branding).

There's also a longer version with a few extra shots but pretty much the same.

I had a funny feeling once the channel became "official" it wouldn't be long before someone wanted to rebrand it. Shame really I thought the previous version was brilliant. This still looks good, and as mentioned, good to see big logo and CGI remaining. The Flash video doesn't really do it much justice.

And here's the new endboard:

That looks great apart from the Subtitles tag, which looks cheaply out of place.

Yeah I agree, it should be minimized it seems oversized for just a subs badge.

This is what TV idents used to look like and still should do on SD broadcasts! Thumb Right

Hopefully, the jobsworths working for marketing/design agencies who have absorbed vast amounts of money in the process of turning British TV branding into utter crap over the last 5 or 6 years will sit up and take notice of this one - BBC HD doesn't need brand consultancy to have good looking presentation. All we need now is for every other major broadcaster to realise that they've been well and truly sold up the garden path with the amount of money they've paid out to receive crap presentation in recent years, and British TV presentation might get back on form again.

They only all looked like that because computer animation was new and once channel 4 made their logo shiny and spun it around everyone else copied them! Once that happened it became tired and cliched and everyone moved on to copy BBC2.

It's the same sort of thing with an HD channel, they want to flash off the technology and how crisp their pictures are so they'll come up with shiny, whizzy computer animated graphics.

It's more a design decision made because of the technology than anything else, there's lots of examples of technology leading design in the past.

I like the BBC HD one, however the BBC logo itself looks wrong, the shading doesn't work and it's far too big

It's very very similar to this ident from Al Jazeera's arabic channel *

In fact the idents for Al Jazeera English, which were made for an HD channel also fit in with the my above theory about shiny spinny things.

*BTW, can we embedd You Tube clips here, if so how?

The BBC logo on the ident is too big, and the gradient on the letters doesn't look right, along with the "Subtitles" graphic.

The endboard, however, is very nice. It's a shame the other channels can't follow a similar pres style of a neat endboard and non-human idents.

Yes, it reminds me of the slides the BBC used up to 1997, with the channl logo on a patterned sidebar.

Strange that they've left so much space on the far right - there's no need to be 4:3 safe on HD!
