Is the BBC Guilty of Over Advertising their Products?

so Annoying is the constant repeating of that digiradio ad! (December 2004)

I have seen that rather surreal computer animated ad for DAB Radio and the mention of the BBC's Digital Radio stations no less than FOUR times tonight alone on BBC1 and twice on BBC2, and that irritating "Bitesize Revision" ad with the imitated computer game graphic is also really annoying. Is it just me or do others find these really annoying trailers are more of a turn off and should the BBC actually take notice of comments such as this? They never usually take notice of anything us licence payers say!

If you think that's bad, try counting how many times BBCi's 6-screen trailer - "I can get the latest blah by pressing the Red Button" shows in one night! (I promise at LEAST 1 showing per hour...). And that's been running for months, though not quite as long as "If it happens, it happens here".

That DAB radio ad is very strange indeed! And which radio station does play laid back music with no news anyway, buggered if I know which one it is.

Smooth - it's on MXR ... oh hang on ....

What about Night Train on 6 Music. No news overnight ...

I actually really like those BBC Radio ads - the animation is nicely done and I'm a fan of the surrealness of them. I find the style quite refreshing.

there's nothing wrong with the animation benjy, it's the over use of the ads that are annoying! Once a night is plenty! As for that bitesize revision ad, it makes me and the missus scream at the telly!!!!

Well I suppose they are shown a tad too much - I can't say I find it too annoying - maybe I've just got used to it!

You're right about the Bitesize ad - if they're going to show it as much as they do (and I don't mind too much, as long as it's only around exam times), they should at least make some new ones and change the music!! They've been using the same ones for years, and that's what makes me find them annoying!

Watching a BBC junction now is more like watching a commercial break!

Also, with services like 1 Xtra and 6 Music they are almost always advertised as a brand, rather than specific programmes which I wouldn't really object to - and maybe if people knew what was on these channels, they'd become more popular.

An article today in the BBCi Entertainment News section with the BBC once again defending the digital radio stations and BBC3 and BBC4, claiming innovation is more important than ratings.

Yes, innovation is very important - but what's the point if no one sees it. And in the last couple of years on TV, most new innovative programming launches on the digital channels. BBC3 has quite an innovative mix of original comedy and drama, while BBC1 is just the bland same old, same old!

Rant over!

When you see BBC Prime, you hardly think it's a channel funded by commercial means, as they only show one trailer and straight to the next programme, while the amount of trailers on our licence fee channels is much more and strangely makes our own channels feel more "commercial" which is strange!

About time someone spoke up about the amount of crap between programmes on BBC1 and BBC2. The marketing department has become way to big for its boots and by misappropriating our money into all these promos - ads in all but name - the BBC is abusing our trust.

By all means let viewers know about other BBC services - but this is going to extremes. There's nothing here that couldn't be promoted by the CA.

The Freeview trails are the ones which irritate me the most, likewise the fish - it gave the impression it was to promote a programme or a BBC service, not Friday nights!

And before anyone asks, the song in the 6 Music trailer is Blind Melon's "No Rain" from 1993.

Could the reason for the fact BBC UK have quite long junctions is so that their programmes are designed for an ad-break when syndicated on UK Gold or whatever?
