well kids, its andy knowles' bbc midlands sports awards time - complete with a lovely logo (a quick scan around other regional website suggests they're all different and made in house - in which case its a rather nice attempt)

ooh but look - what does it remind you of ....

http://www.tvmercia.co.uk/upload/pebblemill-plughole.jpg

YES, the pebble mill plughole - its a sign from kay that the pebble mill dream will live on! i also saw kay's face in my tomato soup - she is all around us, willing us to go on, fighting for what we believe in - arati hali can keep trying to ruin the kay dream, but she wont get far. kay has her magic at-a-glance system and her faith in the midlands.

Yes, like the logo - clean and simple.
When do we get to see the awards, are they going to be on Midlands Today or is it some sort of awards ceremony thing?

it is indeed a programme in its own right, and for one cant wait - i actually wrote it in my diary weeks ago *but thats not for here*

SPORT: BBC Midlands Sports Awards
Channel: BBC 1 Midlands
Date: Wednesday 10th December 2003
Time: 23:15 to 23:45 (starting in 9 days)
Duration: 30 minutes.

does anyone know whats happening on the night of the 10th?

digiguide states that:

bbc one midlands (and presumably bbc one east midlands),
bbc one yorkshire & lincolnshire
bbc one north east & cumbria

regions are following this schedule:
22:35 to 23:15 imagine
23:15 to 23:45 bbc midlands sports personality of the year
23:45 to 01:20 film: the hit list
01:20 to 02:00 welcome to britain

whilst

bbc one west
bbc one east
bbc one south west
bbc one south east and
bbc one network

are following this schedule

22:35 to 23:15 imagine
23:15 to 23:45 film: bonfire of the vampires
01:20 to 02:00 welcome to britain

so..... it makes me wonder - where is the film "the hit list" going to be tx-ed from? "up the line from london" specially for the opt out regions, played from pebble mill or manchester to the other regions - or played locally?

lets hope for some regional continuity into the film.

Last year Leeds handed over to Manchester who did pan-North continuity from after the sports awards until they crashed into News24.

Hopefully this year they will have some idents other than Acrobats. They used generic network graphics (except for one lashed up menu for the timeshifted sign zone with a dodgy BBC ONE NORTH red box) but the announcer referred to BBC One North. Which doesn't sound right unless you have Peter Levy or Brian Baines saying it.

I seem to remember that they managed to play out some GMR and Radio Lancashire promos last year - forgetting that they were going out in Yorks&Lincs or were Leeds meant to opt out?

radiotimes.com has a different schedule to the Digiguide one tvmercia gave above for BBC 1 North

10:35pm to 11:05pm Sports Awards
11:05pm to 11:45pm Trail of Guilt
11:45pm to 1:30am Film: The Last Seduction f/b Weatherview
1.30am Sign Zone

although North is the only region opting out if you trust the RT website. Which I don't as it thinks London and the South East are the same region still.

BBC NI are timeshifting The Last Seduction as well, but 10 minutes later... I'd have thought they could have found a 10 minute filler and taken the film via NI, then it might be 16:9 not 14:9 cropporama.

Rather confusingly, BBC South East Today have been saying they're announcing the result of their award on Sunday 7th December - not quite sure where that's going to fit in.

Originally I assumed that this was the day of the national live sports personality show, and all the regions would do an opt in the middle of that, but no, its a week beforehand.

I have never seen SET do anything on the scale of the midlands before, so would be surprised if they did any opts on their own..

I would have thought BBC North West are doing a sports personality award programme again this year too.

Last year's BBC ONE NORTH presentation was interesting with the oversized NORTH over a (probable) airbrushed out BBC ONE North West Red Box. Martin Henfield was at the helm with the announcements, not sure who'll do it this year as the late shift has been a bit random lately. Maybe they should bring Brian Banes back!!

nb I'm in Wales at the moment so haven't seen NWT for a while

That's because tvmercia said their show is next Wednesday whereas the North show is tonight.

Is the North West's show tonight as well?.

ok, so i assumed they'd all be on the same day - but looking at it again - it looks to me like the sports awards are not pan-regional (i assumed that's what they were previously - because we've never had them in the midlands before)

this is the schedule, according to digiguide anyway.

monday 1st december

bbc one england
22:30 to 22:35 regional news
22:35 to 23:15 trail of guilt
23:15 to 01:00 film: the last seduction
01:00 to 01:30 a life of grime

bbc one north west
22:30 to 22:35 regional news
22:35 to 23:05 bbc north sports awards
23:05 to 23:45 trail of guilt
23:45 to 01:30 film: the last seduction
01:30 to 01:35 a life of grime (obviously a mix up there)

monday 8th december

bbc one england
22:30 to 22:35 regional news
22:35 to 23:15 trail of guilt
23:15 to 01:15 film: earthquake
01:50 to 02:50 life of mammals

bbc one north west
22:30 to 22:35 regional news
22:35 to 23:05 trail of guilt
23:05 to 23:45 trail of guilt
23:45 to 01:50 film: earthquake
01:50 to 02:50 life of mammals

bbc one yorkshire & lincolnshire
22:30 to 22:35 regional news
22:35 to 23:10 leeds united on trial
23:10 to 23:50 trail of guilt
23:50 to 01:50 film: earthquake
01:50 to 02:50 life of mammals

wednesday 10th december

bbc one england
22:35 to 23:15 imagine
23:15 to 23:45 film: bonfire of the vampires
01:20 to 02:00 welcome to britain

bbc one midlands
22:35 to 23:15 imagine
23:15 to 23:45 bbc midlands sports personality of the year
23:45 to 01:20 film: the hit list
01:20 to 02:00 welcome to britain

(bbc one yorkshire & lincolnshire and bbc one north east & cumbria show the same albeit with blank spaces instead of sports awards programmes)

so ... are bbc nw, yorks and lincs and ne&c all having separate shows - and even so - why not show them all on the same night - rather than manchester having theirs tonight?

Yorks and Lincs is definitely tonight

So is it definally on in the North West tonight?

If it was just Yorkshire we might get continuity from Ian White, but if the North West are taking part it might be Martin Henfield

Cathy Killick did the continuity into the Y&L only part last year.

Just dug out a tape of last year's New Broadcasting House Spectacular, this is that dodgy caption (never knew Watchdog was two words)

http://www.rp-networkservices.com/tvforum/uploads/northopt1.jpg

and maybe the reason why they're not timeshifting the Sign Zone this year

and they say that the Midlands have the monopoly when it comes to dodgy in-house captions. "Watch Dog" indeed! Laughing
