It wouldnt cos us on cable and DTT get regional BBC1 anyway (but we get BBC2 England which is extremly annoying as we get UK Today rather than EM Today and Metropol rather than Midlands @ Westminster) and SKY get a different feed to cable and DTT. So the 3 million odd DTT and Digital Cable people needn't worry as the 5 million odd on SKY get a different BBC1 to us.

That announcement would be completely meaningless for us digital terrestrial (and cable) viewers.

I assume there will be a seperate digital v/o saying 'This is BBC ONE, for your local programme, press red and select your region, or press TV then 1, but here it's time for BBC London News'.

Digital satellite and digital terrestrial do get the same feed, except that the regions opt out of it on DTT. If they don't - as happened with Newsroom South East the other week - DTT viewers would see the 'press tv and button 1 etc' message that goes out on satellite, as opposed to the 'we're sorry we can't bring you your regional news etc' message seen on analogue.
I doubt when the regions go on satellite, they'll provide two separate feeds for D-sat and DTT.

Firstly, superb!!! Wonder if they'll bother with any send off on the last edition of UK Today? Probably not.
Secondly, http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/news/news350.htm for the official news.
Thirdly, how do this five region thing work?
The article above implies English viewers will initially get to view either LDN, North West Today, Look North, Midlands Today and South Today. So thats the five choices. Will the choices be increased when the others appear?
Ahh, Yorkshire Television and Look North again - It'll be like I'm back up north!

I have to say this has left me a little confused. Is it the case that only viewers in these 5 regions will have this service available to them? Ie regional news in the South West isn't covered on digital? I'm not really clear on whether we can just watch any region from the list or whether we just pick one and that is set as default for that box.

Reading it again it would appear that you will be presented with a choice of 5 regions. Those five regions will be generic - that's for everyone. So if my thinking is correct that means that everyone in the North West will have the same options as everyone in the South. Yes? The five choices will not vary depending on the region you live in, they will just be a generic choice of 5?
A little confusing.

Obviously the BBC would try to get all regions online, but they don't have the transponder space, as this regional service is using the same transponder space as the BBC Wimbledon Interactive. Now all we have to hope for is that when all the regions come on DSAT that they don't restrict the regions to postcodes.

The BBC will not be restricting the regional choice within England by postcode (though no idea if these will be available in the Nations)
The BBC are pointing out the potential benefit to viewers of Dsat, as those who are not able to receive their correct region on analogue, due to transmitter patterns not matching geographical and editorial regions, will be able to select their correct region from the choice. An example of this is North Norfolk - where many viewers get Look North (now the Hull opt I believe) from Belmont rather than Look East (out of Norwich) from Tacolnestone.
Initally only North West Tonight (Manchester), Look North (Leeds), Midlands Today (Birmingham) , South Today (Southampton) and BBC LDN (London) will be available. I guess this is all the BBC have space for on their Interactive transponder until they cough up a bit more... (Maybe they could show a different set of five each day

It would be very easy to switch BBC2 to a national channel without any need for BBC2 to be regionalised.
a) Move the 3:20pm bulletin to BBC ONE, this could be done with rejigging the afternoon schedule, CBBC could start 5 minutes later, meaning Pingu would be dropped
b) Move 'North of/North West/Westminster etc to BBC ONE, very easilly done, move Countryfile to BBC TWO.
c) Move Close Up North etc to BBC ONE, Thursday at 7.30, with a bit of a change of the other timings
d) The Super League Show/Other Opt-Outs could also from now on be on BBC ONE. Theres always a couple of programmes which are a bit insignificant and could be opted out of.
See it wouldn't be too hard!.

I think the plan is to move all BBC2 English opt-outs to BBC1 in the not too distant future. Although you certainly couldn't have the Thursday documentary at 7.30 on BBC1, since there's something else in permament residence in that slot... I think a 10.35 slot one evening would be most likely.
