The aforementioned News broadcast will have most probably been wiped by now, anyway.

I see BBC NI was still on B/W in 1974...

All the BBC NI inserts I saw today were colour, but it's likely that there were still some b&w cameras knocking around. As it was an election all available kit would have been in use, this may have included some old kit.

How addictive is this? I am awash with nostalgia - BUT..

Some of the tape degridation is appaling - and it's no-ones fault.
During the Rev. Ian Paisley victory speech at around 4.50 (2003 time!), it was almost unwatchable, and it wasn' the original OB signal as the on screen captions were wandering and distorting as well.
I'm amazed that this was not cut out of the broadcast, and a year 2003 caption faded over the screen during the bad parts, explaining about the picture quailty and the reason why.

Apart from that - roll on next week and 1983...

Ooh is there another one next week?

And if so, what about 1979?

No, it's recorded parliamentary coverage next Friday after the Tory conference

Maybe they'll show another election during the Christmas recess

The OB from one of the counts in NI was B/W but that could have been a B/W links truck?

I've been dipping in and out of the coverage during the day. The BBC N. Ireland studio-based material I've seen has all been in colour. One of the OBs I managed to catch appeared to be b&w (there was considerable picture disturbance for the entire OB). I did spot some BBC Leeds studio material in b&w.

Thanks to Mark, noggin and Larry: some excellent material within this thread.

Hi everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only person on the 'net who saw this today...

I thought the election 74 stuff was fascinating. It was like a video time capsule!
robin day's arguments about "the computer" vs the swingometer.
the fact that the FTSE was only based on 30 companies and it was only updated on the hour.
the pound being worth USD2.
smoking and drinking on TV.
that really annoying nerd in the studio that kept interrupting the anchor man. how much of a liberal fan was he?!
fasion in the mid 70's.
harold wilson getting a "He's a jolly good fellow" and it dying out halfway through the first verse.
how pure and "spin free" everything was back then
where some monty python sketches come from.
when colour tv was a new thing.
brian walden.
robert maxwell.
the references to "the watergate"
how scary it's all gonna be 30 years from now.

What an excellent idea to re-run the whole thing unedited. It knocks things like the history channel dead.
I'd love to see other things like this re-run unedited... it makes the phrase "for posterity" stand out as a winner

Please excuse my ramblings!

I agree - very adictive!!!
Funny when Robin Day was doing an interview and choked - he started coughing through the entire interview even when they handed back to Alistair (I am a Torry) Burnett you could still here him spluttering away. Is Sir Alistair still alive?? Ahh the good old days!!

In a moment of boredom I tried searching google and alltheweb for references to various correspondents... couldn't find anything for most of the people I checked out. Where do they get all the reporters from for elections anyway? Are they local radio reporters who get to be on TV for and evening? Did they have local radio in the mid 70's?
There's some great threads on this site.
