BBC DSAT channels off air on Friday Morning?

Media Monkey Says so. (July 2007)

The apocalyptic weather that spread across London this morning caused mayhem for television channels. All BBC channels broadcast over satellite - BBC1 and BBC2, News 24, CBBC and CBeebies - went off air between 11.41am and 11.53am as the huge main dish at TV Centre in west London couldn't cope with the intensity of the downpour. BBC2 was broadcasting the Open golf from Carnoustie, where, ironically enough, the sun was out and play was continuing. Monkey wonders whether a higher force was sending the Beeb its own punishment over the recent spate of phone scams.

And as a consequence the Channel Islands lost their terrestrial transmissions, as the local Beeb use Sky as their incoming source.

Interesting, so it didn't fall back to the old SABRE site on Alderney ?

Did this even happen? Did anyone see it? I haven't seen mention of it on here, on Digitalspy or on bbc.co.uk.

Was the weather even that bad in London?

Yes. I was watching News 24 when it happened, because the cricket was suspended due to the torrential rain at Lords.

It definitely happened, and if you look properly, it was mentioned in Digital Spy's satellite forums. A lot of other channels were also having uplink problems (mainly the cheap-o-crap channels).

Hold on, almost all of the BBC's channels went off air both on terrestrial and digital this morning? I thought Redbee handled their output down the road, not TVC?

I thought we're talking about Friday morning (20th July) ?

Nothing to do with Red Bee, this is Siemens. The Astra (aka 'Sky) uplink for all BBC TV and radio is situated at TVC.

It was just the satellite channels, terrestrial stayed on air (except for the Channel Islands apparently), but BBC2 lost the golf a few times.

Apparently Shepherds Bush/White City (where the BBC is) got the bunt of it. I work in another part of West London we lost reception from almost all of our satellite recievers for a bit (luckily we don't uplink!)

Presumably it wiped out the up-links for the 'direct to home' satellite as well as the dish that was downlinking the golf.

Not an unusual event, the same thing happened in Paris a couple of months ago temporarily wiping out lots of pan-european channels uplinked from there.
