I'm surprised they have moved it for Learning Zone, many schools still use 4:3 TVs and VCRs. That raises the question why they still use a BBC Two DOG on the Learning Zone, my impression was it is there so when the programmes are shown in schools the students know the Learning Zone is on BBC Two should they want to record any of the programmes themselves. If the DOG is now mostly cut off in that situation, it defeats that purpose of it being there.

Slightly off topic perhaps, but it was comforting yet slightly odd to see that they are still playing the old GCSE Bitesize videos that I watched to revise for my GCSEs 11 years ago. Have GCSEs really not changed that much!? I'd be surprised these days if anybody actually watched them!

Some things have changed. I think you'll find that the same poems and books are used for Literature. Certainly in Geography we still use the same videos. Most processes still work the same!

They do revise the content of these programmes to suit the syllabus, and many of them get re-voiced.

No reason why can't BBC2 show learning zone mid-morning, Cbeebies should start to be reduced as its stupid that being on most of the morning when people know where the Cbeebies channel is. I want some old films too Sad

Primary school programming was, until last year, broadcast on BBC2 mid-morning but has now been moved to the Learning Zone.

With all this talk of dropping BBC2 daytime, maybe the Learning Zone could move to BBC2 at daytime.

On the overnight Learning Zone, they have also managed to move the 'BBC TWO' DOG to the 16:9 area in line with the recent changes. The graphic itself is still the good old 1997 logo!

I love the Learning Zone's branding, purely for the fact its the last remaining channel (well, programming block) to use the 1997 branding which I think still stands to this day. It's like going back to 1999, days of BBC Knowledge till midday and whatnot.

I totally agree. Just 10 years ago everything from BBC One to UK Gold was using that lovely clean format for idents, menus, logos etc. It was a terrible decision to move away from it IMO.

The Learning Zone ident itself is a perfect component of the 1997 Corporate scheme, long may it remain!

Since your talking about, how long the Learning Zone branding has lasted, I wondered if anyone could shed some light as to how old the Party Political Broadcast caption is?

This example for the European elections, however it is basically the same as the current ones airing, minus the stars.

Really? I thought it was all so bland. It was consistent but just not flexible enough for all the different contexts it had to be used in, look at the dull CBBC idents from that time.

I really liked the CBBC idents of the time, but that's partly because they were 'my' time I guess. I think concessions could have been made for Children's without completely scrapping the rulebook.

Me too, I loved the way it was 'CBBC ONE' or 'CBBC TWO', that was a brilliant idea.

Oddly, Sky Atlantic seem to have a different view on DOGs.

They even show a 16:9 safe DOG on some 4:3 programmes, although it can be seen as apart of the sidebars.

The rest of the programme is shown in 16:9.

(and for anyone else who likes the music from ER) Laughing

I think that's an anomaly with ER because the title sequence is in 4:3 but the rest of programme in 16:9, as it is on the DVDs - it was originally shown on TV in "centre cut-out".

When they show The X Files, the DOG is 4:3 safe even though the programme is "pillarboxed" on the HD channel.

The Sky Atlantic DOG changes, depending on whether a show was 4:3 or 16:9. Most of the older series, like ER, have the stretched DOG, whilst the modern series, such as Blue Bloods, have the normal DOG.
