'The culture secretary, Tessa Jowell, has confirmed she will be going ahead with her announcement about the BBC's digital TV channels.

She will make her speech as planned at the Royal Television Society convention at 7pm.'

Wonder if the Beeb will give a set date/month of the launch of the channels soon after the decision?

Lets hope Media Guardian are working late again tonight so we actually get to find out what's happened.. doesn't seem likely it'll get any coverage otherwise.

They were speculating, or one of their columnists was, a week or so ago, that Tessa Jowell might not allow the digital-radio part of the proposals given the slow take up and high price of receivers.

The Release of these new channels may mean that most people will recieve a digi-box?

Great news anyway, i'd have thought they'd be ready to launch as soon as possible, but will make quite a thing of the launch. There are rumours of a FTA Digital Terestrial reciever for about £50, the government won't start giving them out for a few years, but its deffinatly a move in the right direction.

Wouldn't it be an idea for them to increase the number of homes which can receive DTT before they turn off the transmitters? At the moment I can only receive intermittent DTT - the BBC channels are usually fine, ITV1, C4, C5, ITV2 are bad, ITV Select is almost non-existant.

Well the theory is that when analogue is switched off, digital should get stronger.

Has there been any word on whether the channels were approved last night? The best I can find is from Waveguide which states that 'she is thought to have given conditional go-ahead'.

Apparently the speech is tonight, not last night.

Nick Robison on News 24 has just said that Tessa Jowell has been made responsible for dealing with various arrangements re: the USA terrorist attacks, e.g. funeral arrangements for British victims in America, some travel arrangements etc - so I wouldn't be at all surprised if her speech at the RTS is cancelled after all.

Seems like this announcement is doomed..

so BBC4 and the kids channels get to go ahead, as do the new radio services.
The BBC have to 're-think' BBC3
News 24 has a review - but that was already known

The announcement has just been made and it doesn't look like good news for the BBC:

BBC4 has been approved

The two new childrens channels have also been given the go ahead.

But an independent reviewer has been appointed to look at BBC 3 AND at BBC News 24.

And the BBC probably won't be able to launch BBC 4 without BBC 3 - so where does this leave them?
