The BBC have confirmed that regular children's programming on BBC 1 & 2 will stop in December.

Quote:
BBC One and BBC Two will stop showing children's programming blocks after Christmas.

Children's output will continue on digital channels CBeebies and CBBC although BBC Children's director Joe Godwin said BBC One and BBC Two will occasionally showcase "the very best of what we do".

Approved by the BBC Trust in May, the blocks' removal will follow the completion of digital switchover this October and is expected to save on repeat fees as the corporation aims to cut costs by 20%.

BBC One will replace the blocks with new daytime programmes while BBC Two will air live sports and repeats of factual shows from the archive.

Hardly surprising, seen as digital switchover will have been completed by then. Not that I like the whole multi-channel era, but that's the future and the present.

Although I can imagine what will be filled in that time slot on BBC One, I'd love to know what's going to replace it on BBC Two, because it leaves a giant gap in the morning schedule everyday, and with almost no daytime budget, I can't imagine BBC Four repeats from 6.00am regularly, it's not as if Pages From Ceefax will be an option from 2013 either.

CBeebies simul... oh, right.

World News? Radio live streaming? Learning Zone Extra / Xtra / X-TREME?

Would there be any significant monetary advantage in closing down until 11.30am (with provision for sport and events) vs repeat/simulgeddon? Or would that risk triggering a Digital Spy-Daily Mail meltdown screaming that the licence fee is now getting you even less?

Well Pages from Ceefax will be replaced by something (possibly just a 'BBC Two returns at 10am' slide) - I'd suggest Learning Zone moves in to the morning, and whatever the Pages from Ceefax replacement is does the rest.

Did anybody really watch Blue Peter when they were young?

I rarely/never watched any Children's BBC output during my entire childhood (born 1980). I was firmly a Children's ITV kid (my strongest memories are of Knightmare, Fun House, and Finders Keepers). It was a bit like a sort of "class divide" or similar, to me. I thought of Children's BBC generally (and especially the likes of Blue Peter specifically) as being "dull and worthy", and only appealing to what the Junior School-aged me always called "Daddy's buying me a pony for Christmas"-type children, (and/or their aspirational middle-class parents).

I agree with you Justice Once - I hardly watched any Children's BBC either - I thought it was for upper class children and perceived to be monotonous and lacking in any real excitement. Children's ITV, especially in the 1988 -1992 era was absolutely buzzing!!

While ITV were good at the gameshows in this era, it was definatly also a high point for BBC childrens drama, something that ITV never seemed to get right.

Oh I don't know, that era in particular saw Press Gang and Children's Ward.

Yes - I felt CITV was always good for fun game shows and general entertainment (Art Attack over Smart any day) but the BBC were always very good at original drama and I believe they still are from some of the promotions I've seen of late.

I was the same, though I think it was as much an age thing as a class one. Before my teens, for example, I saw Newsround as not different to any other news. The idea of news in a childrens programming block just seemed bonkers. It was also a lot more stuffy and formal back in those days (the late 80s). Blue Peter was similar. It felt like a programme you'd watch in school.

I got more into CBBC as a teen though. The Queens Nose and The Demon Headmaster were personal favourites, though Pokémon was still a guilty pleasure over on CITV.

And also there was the Central Television Workshop where Midlands kids were featured on the likes of Palace Hill on CITV.
