The BBC Coat of Arms

Why don't we see it on TV anymore?

Coat of Arms was always a thing with state institutions, my dad was a civil servant, and I remember notepads etc he'd bring home had such insignia on them. The BBC fell into that bracket too.

It's still a thing with the government , take a look at this picture of the No 10 press conference room

I don't think that the BBC is that much interested in its past.

If they don't then I suppose this page doesn't really mean anything?

I didn't realise there was another version of the coat of arms with the 'Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation' replaced. Does that coat of arms still live in Broadcasting House?

That article also features a shot of the original BBC One mechanical clock.

The version using QUAECUNQUE was in use during a period where lots of the transmitter sites were built. Seems strange that buildings in the middle of nowhere that weren't likely to receive many visitors would have the carved crest, but many did.

Indeed, a few have simplified them with the times as well - as they don't reduce well. Most public sector organisations pre 1990 had/have one.

There's an idea for a mock if anyone wants it, simplify the BBC coat of arms.

Here's a few examples I can think of from my world of work presented with their originals:

* (1984)

Football is an exception here I guess where several clubs have badges/crests using either the city Arms or something stylised that looks a bit like a Coat of Arms. Some, like Liverpool's, are relatively recent creations.

could have the shield with the globe in a roundel like the Man CIty crest

It's a bit of a throwback to Victorian era architecture where they used to add all sorts of detailing in places that would never be seen by the public. I think it was on Grand Designs that they visited a water tower that had stone carvings or mouldings on the inside stairwells well away from public view. A time where there was some prestige and a sense of longevity for the buildings.

Probably makes sense as it's on the new part of the building. Was there one in/on the original BH?

Incidentally I stumbled across this really interesting archaelogical building survey of the Woodhouse Lane site, including loads of photos from after the BBC left

(Which still doesn't explain where Studios B and C were!)

I don’t recall ever seeing one, unless it was on the wall covered by the newer part of the building.

I like page 47 on the second link, the Canford Audio 'On Air' light modified to display when they had RDS TA raised !

I see the vandals still got inside, didn't really matter, as everything was going to end up as rubble in a skip anyway, but still dismaying to see.

Canford make an unprinted one for that purpose - and will actually print anything you want on one if you ask them nicely...

Oh, I know, I've had various ones printed over the years, though a few clients reject them these days, because they look a bit, cough, <hospital radio>.

A real laugh I suppose would be to have them printed in Comic Sans !
