Forgetting the idents it was really depressing seeing the Christmas preview in one of the TV guides this week and literally everything being something that's been on at Christmas for the last few years.

As for the idents - last years were adequate but ultimately forgetable, while the less said about the year before the better. At least though they'll be something new this year - something new each year which is a little bit crap is kind of how it used to be.

You've hit the nail on the head there Brekkie... the listings last year were complete tripe.
It wasn't just the BBC though, the other channels have a lot of explaining to do as well.

So now you've got the BBC One font you want to make really annoying, poor quality mocks to show off? Beautiful!

Yes Razz

No, not really.
But think about it, is the real thing going to be that much better?

Why they can't reuse Snowball is beyond me. It probably had high production values and looked terrific on screen. I would be perfectly happy if they decided to reuse it next year.

Snowball really has remained one of those timeless idents; it hasn't really dated at all. I would be more than happy if they just used that for the festive period, it's certainly the kind of ident that could withstand the current Christmas timeframe.

I won't spoil this one but I have seen the new idents which have almost been completed.

Never fret fellow Forumers, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the new festive ident, I've got it right here:

This will run from the 30th of November to the 5th of January. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Oh I don't know.......it's better than curtain!

There you go.

If the christmas idents from 2012 or 2013 had been posted onto the Gallery, it would have been one-starred into oblivion:

"This is awful."
"Bland, boring. You put a circle animation in where there is none."

Only time will tell what we'll have this year... come on Duncan, just a peek... Wink

Yehhhh... the problem with the last two years' wasn't that they were incompetently made. Even 2012's conceptual misfire still had competent animation, restricted by the theme/budget.

I'm probably in the minority who thought last year's were quietly charming in small doses. Not the pinnacle of festive broadcast design maybe but they felt at home on the BBC.

Did you never get told not to go looking for presents as you'll ruin the surprise?

If any insiders were allowed to reveal "peeks" of this year's christmas presentation, it would already be all over the internet. As they haven't done so, don't ask them to, as it just boils down to you asking them to risk a disciplinary for your personal satisfaction.

I do agree with this post. It isn't fair to ask those with professional knowledge to jeopardise their livelihoods. Things are embargoed for a reason and whether temptation is there or not, most people with common sense would know that those in the know are not allowed to nor are willing to break embargoes. We at least know that something new is coming and that we haven't got long to wait. I would just like to know one small thing: are they festive? Do they make those who see them feel festive? That's all I care about.

I would be happy with a rough weekend, as to when something might happen. Mind you the other reason for keeping said mouth shut is, its not unheard of stuff being tweaked days before launch.

Indeed. There were also "shall we/shan't we" discussions surrounding last year's Toy Story ident and a change of planned launch night from 1st December to 3rd December last year. So, in hindsight, perhaps it's better to be teased rather than told! I daresay we'll eventually be aware of when and where to look!

I stand corrected, you two are right.

If last year's idents hadn't run for so long, I wouldn't have had a problem with them. It was clearly made in the same way as pre-1991 idents: that wouldn't be so bad if they only ran for 3 days like they used to though!

Anyway, they're nearly finished - so even if they are bad we're stuck with them! Only time will tell, we might be pleasantly surprised.
I hope so anyway Very Happy

BIB: I have a feeling it will be the red background and something simple again. Last year's was a lot better than 2012's, but that's not hard! Although, if they had used Christmassey music in 2012 rather than that swing number it might have improved them. Miranda Hart however, has apologised for being in "everything" this Christmas, so perhaps they are reverting back to the 2011 style celebrity idents - which were jolly and festive enough to keep me happy!

But that's always happened - look at the greatest Christmas Day line-up in the history of British television, 1977...
http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbcone/london/1977-12-25

Morecambe and Wise were first on Christmas Day in 1969, the Generation Game in 1971, Mike Yarwood in 1972. Are You Being Served was making its first appearance on Christmas Day but had started in 1972. Basil Brush was hardly a new talent even then. Even The Wizard Of Oz had been shown before, on Christmas Day 1975.

Only Fools and Horses had a new episode on Christmas Day fourteen times, the Generation Game fourteen times, Morecambe and Wise eleven times across the channels. None of the shows on primetime Christmas Day this year, outside the soaps, have appeared on the big day as often as that (Doctor Who is the longest running, making its tenth appearance). Shows like Only Fools and Horses and Morecambe and Wise became more cherished and loved over the years because they became a tradition.

People like the familiar at Christmas, because it's Christmas.

There seems to be a wall of silence surrounding any BBC Christmas Ident this year! This time last year we were all speculating about when they'd get their first airing - and we knew Delroy would be the announcer to introduce them. Perhaps this suggests they're not really bothering much this year! I guess only time will tell. I know we;ve already been informed that there will be something new, but apart from that - nothing! Zilch! Perhaps we're getting LOVE CHRISTMAS this year and that will blend in nicely with LOVE 2015.

Wicko- surely Christmas is a time for surprises? I won't spoil this one but I have seen the new idents which have almost been completed. There's not long to wait and a wonderful trail teasing all things festive is coming soon... which may make sense of my posts from a week or two back. Ho ho ho

But the big questions are do you like the idents Duncan and are there any big films on this year? That's all I care about!
