You mean like 1998's ident?

They could maybe have some christmas themed footage behind and a bauble as the circle bit maybe?

Or the camera slowly moving up the tree and it gets to a bauble with BBC One on it

Like BBC Northern Ireland did last year as an alternative to the curtains nonsense?

Yes, I also liked the Doctor Who Christmas 2009 ident. One other aspect I also particularly liked that year (which I don't think BBC1 always gets right every Christmas) is the serious 'news' version. The soundtrack was spot-on for leading into news bulletins and other serious programming. Sometimes, the serious versions are a little too upbeat for me, considering what they are intended to be used for. I accept it is a difficult balance to strike, as on the one hand, it is the festive season, but on the other hand, news is still a serious business, even at Christmas time.

Completely agree - they got the news ident/soundtrack spot on in 2009. None of the succeeding 'news' idents after that have gotten the right tone.

I still wonder WHY BBC Scotland stopped doing its own idents. I think it was 1990 when it took the netwoked feed.

Presumably because there was no longer the need for them to do their own thing. When the Christmas ident was a physical model in one of the Pres studios in London, the symbol wouldn't have been available to Scotland if their junctions didn't coincide with network's (or if they hadn't made special arrangements to get it fed up to them), so they created their own.

I also think the 2010 news ident worked well. That was another good year for The whole Christmas presentation in my opinion.

It's more visually interesting than 2009 but I still think the soundtrack is too upbeat/jolly in comparison.

That's the year that stands out for me; a simple, strong theme and it looked really, really good on screen. The pre form-up stuff was pure cheese yes but everything else nailed the right Christmas feel:

Still my fave - obviously it was from it's time, but kept to the brand with the right amount of Christmas thrown in.

Unlike some of the final idents from the balloon era where the balloon was just pasted into a corner over shots of people dancing and such like.

The visuals of the 2010 News Version (bottom video, below) was certainly to a high standard, and its soundtrack was fairly well judged (although slightly too upbeat, for me), but the showing of form-up straight away on this particular ident did give it a cold feel. Compare this with the 2009 News Version (top video, below). That superbly judged soundtrack, along with that beautiful, colourful sunset (or sunrise – I can never tell which!) and the slowly falling snow over that scene, which kind of shimmers as it falls. When watching that scene, it has a warm, cosy feel, and, as I say, the soundtrack could not have been judged better for use with news and other serious programming. My only tiny criticism is its lack of something circular in the visuals to truly harmonise with the logo and swirl, but that’s a very small criticism. Very close to Christmas ‘News Version’ ident perfection, for me!

I wonder if, with it being Doctor Who's 50th and with Matt Smith's final story airing at Christmas will they hand the idents to Doctor Who again.
