Don't like the whole thing, but the outdoor rink on Princes Street in Edinburgh would have been a much better choice of location.
Ooh, good shout - they could have borrowed the penguins from up the road...

I dont think the BBC One logo stands out that much either?? The first B and the e on the end get a bit lost on the white ice!!

Anyone agree?

And wouldn't it have been better using an outdoor ice rink?
I think you've hit the nail on the head - the concept and the execution are great, but you can't escape from the fact that it's lit like an indoor ice rink. I suppose the problem is that there aren't many outdoor ice rinks set up in early Autumn!

As you said though, it's lit like an indoor ice rink, they could have set up their own lighting rig to make it seem darker.
I was thinking that somewhere like Somerset House would have been a nice setting - but you're right, even some better indoor lighting would have done the trick.

Still, it may just be RealVideo doing strange things to it. Maybe it'll look better on the telly!

That does look like an amazing setting, and would have been perfect for the ident. Though I suppose the only way that they could have done it would have been to have come up with the idea and recorded it last year before the rink closed.

Last years was much more christmas-ee, and much nicer in terms of location and camera angles. You can tell this one was done by the same people who made that awful 'Neon' one, the drum pattern is the same!

I have to say that the ident is rather nice. Lots going on and far more interesting than last year. Also the CGI penguins are even better done than the hippoes.

I do agree with others here that they want use it to introduce the news. Shocked

Somerset House is used on New Years Eve on BBC One for their end of year finale show, so maybe that's why it wasn't used as it'd look like too much.

Also it is only a seasonal rink. Not sure how long it takes to animate all those penguins but I would have thought that they wouldn't have been able to film at Somerset house in time to produce the ident. An indoor rink is probably easier to light too.

Another option would have been the rink at the foremer home of BBC TV, Alexandra Palace, but I think it wouldn't look as good on screen.

It's quite apt an idea as ice skating seems to have caught on in popularity the last few years - more and more rinks spring up every christmas

I think it's just the Real Video format.

Ah, but not here in Scotland! We have Edinburgh Castle & ''Hogmanay Live'' for that time of year!
