Is that not a Christmas tree of sorts in the middle of the ice rink?

Not really. Trees are green, and made of wood. That is just a red cone, made of giant baubles. Wink

When I first saw it I thought they were stones like they use for curling - made sense to me seeing as it was on an ice rink - but curling stones aren't really as Christmassy as baubles are they? Laughing

If they are using Snowball too, I'm surprised it's not linked to on the BBC1 website (idents window). It's still there though - albeit hidden from the menus - http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/idents/bb_rm_ident.shtml?redirect=ident.shtml&lang=en&nbram=1&bbram=1&bbcws=1&clip=snowball

Snowball was very festive compared to this years, nice but... not 'Christmasy' effort.

I would hope that it will make an apperance sometime this Christmas.

The stings look like a teaser advertising a christmas family movie

BBC1 used a short version of Penguins into the Midday News which, as predicted, looked inappropriate. Sombre announcement with lively ident - never a good mix.

I knew this would happen, we did say didn't we?

The (very) BBC2 ident(s)- reminiscent of early 90s idents and drawing on early 60s abstract- are vastly superior to the new BBC1 penguin ident, which I still think is awful. In fact, it seems even worse than I first thought.

I think they might revert to using Snowball Short into news? That was slower than the main ident wasnt it?

The producers of the BBC2 idents appear to have a Youtube account. More information as well as Clean (and boxless) versions of the BBC2 idents and stings can be found here

As much as I love the cuteness of the new idents, part of me is thinking that they should have either created a few with the penguins, or use other animals.

Such as penguin's going shopping, going to a house for Christmas, and use this to create different feels to introduce different types of programmes, but to keep the penguin branding through.

Or use other types of animals, like reindeer just walking down a highstreet in amoungst the hustle and bustle of shoppers (though I suppose that the shelf life of that ident would run out at Christmas Eve. But I think you see where I'm coming from.

No-one's actually seen BBC4 though, it would seem.

BBC4 are, disappointingly, still in regular non-christmas mode. Which is slightly worrying, because the other three Beeb channels are all being festive.

This is certainly most surprising, considering the other three were. And though this might not be the right place to discuss it, we still haven't seen any sign of anything festive on five.

They must be very grateful to BBC1 - everyone's going to be heading there when the school holidays start for sure.

Hmm - looks like BBC2's symbols this year well exceed 30 seconds of audio, but unfortunately and weirdly the animation itself does not - it ends at dead-on 30" and remains frozen on the last frame - all while the music continues on, like it was intended for a longer ident...

Well, are they a "natural" freeze (best example I can think of is Channel 4's original ident) where everything's come to rest before it freezes, or is it something like Seascape where it'll never come to rest and so it's horridly obvious that it's not right?

It's a nasty point to freeze the symbol - more comparable to Seascape, but worse than that, even (!): it ends at the exact point a large soft-focussed snowflake passes down the right-hand side of the screen, freezing just as it hovers over the base of the '2'; so clearly not the most natural place to leave it!

A-ha! It supplies us with the official names - always favourable to simply naming them 'Xmas Ident 1 / 2' or similar.

I shall listen to these snippets (looks like the first half of both?) later, regardless of YouTube's rough quality - not quite a match for the broadcast picture yet, eh? Wink
