I don't see a problem using a previous ident to add to the collection rather than the alternative of not using a new one at all. Besides we would be going boo hiss before Christmas Day if the Penguins were being used ad finium before then anyway.

So why not instead try the 1997 approach of a common theme, but several different idents on that theme?

I was most surprised this was never tried again - there was BBC1 with 47 different idents for 362 days of the year, but back to just one for the other three.

It's probably down to money or trying to keep it simple as possible. Mind you, I didn't rate one the following year which featured the giant red baubal.

Paul, tvarksouthwest and Jenny you're right. I didn't think about the two variations for Copper and the water one. I used to think that if Copper was played in full it would turn into the black and white version. And if the water one continued you'd see the water become more rough.

I was watching that one earlier on Laughing

For argument's sake let's look at 2004. Bouncy Puddings. We could have had three or four different idents proper on the theme but instead all the effort seemed to go into the stings and we were left with just one continuously-used ident. It wouldn't have been too difficult to work those stings into idents in their own right.

Well blow me down, today is Saturday 15 December 2007, i.e. TEN days before Christmas Day, and already BBC One has started screening its Christmas 2007 idents before programmes.

This evening, I saw the debut showing of "Penguins" at the start of Strictly Come Dancing at 18:09. Quite an impressive ident, as you expect it's mostly penguins skating on an ice rink. There are people skating on the ice as well, but the penguins outnumber the people. I suppose ice skating is appropriate, considering it's cold, and implying it's a winter sport. Furthermore some towns and cities have temporary ice rinks (perhaps open air) over Christmas. A Christmas tree is put in place to complete the link with Christmas, and the penguins and people skate around the tree. Hence it fits into BBC One's circles theme.

It's certainly a bit different to recent years, but that's what BBC One wanted.

Just before the late news, I noticed BBC One showed last year's Snowball ident. Why was that? Could it be because the "Penguins" one is too lively for the news? Was "Snowball" really more sombre / formal than "Penguins", and thus better suited to news? Does anyone know?

Well so far I've only seen BBC One's festive offering. I've yet to see what the other seven BBC channels (BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC News 24 and BBC Parliament) have to offer.

Does anyone actually know why BBC4, at least from the junctions I've seen, are for some reason still showing regular pres? Confused

Though unlikely, I'm hoping there's just a delay in getting it to air this year - but part of me fears someone has been posessed by the spirit of Scrooge, and decided to 'Do a Channel 4' on us...I sincerely hope that isn't the case.

What? BBC Four still using normal idents? Perhaps BBC Four will put their Christmas ident up during this week. If so, will they recycle the snow scene from the last couple of years, or make something new?

I've set my HDD-DVD recorder to record for an hour 11pm to midnight, and my Pace DTVA to switch between BBC Parliament, BBC Three, BBC Four and BBC Two as each progamme junction arises. Tomorrow I'll watch them all, just for curiosity, and hopefully also have time to see what CBBC and CBeebies are up to with Christmas pres.

I don't give a bucket of jellyfish how you're going to do such a thing, so why go into so much detail?

Do BBC Parliament even bother with Christmas pres - I wouldn't have expected them too.

Well I happened to notice that the four said BBC channels are having programme junctions one after another during the course of the said hour, so the way I've gone about it it's possible to get the junctions from the four said BBC channels through a timed recording. I'll probably be more meticulous over Christmas, e.g. from reading this thread, someone reckons BBC Two has multiple Christmas idents, so I'll want to get them all.
