I couldn't disagree any more strongly with you there. Whilst there are now many religions and cultures in the UK, which in my opinion is great, we shouldn't forget that it is still a Christian country. After all, you wouldn't see Christmas idents in non-Christian countries!
And so what if Christmas has become too commercial. Think of all the happiness it creates and of all of the families it brings together. It is the only time of the year that my family sits around the table and eats a meal together! Don't knock Christmas, it's great.

What exactly do you man by 'a Christian country'?
As Christianity isn't the only religion here, how does that statement make sense? Christianity may well be the dominant religion (i.e. there may be more Christians in the UK than followers of all other religions put together) but the UK is not EXCLUSIVELY Christian, which is what the phrase I've singled out implies.
Plus of course, there's atheists, non-theists, agnostics, humanists, secularists, and all that sort of thing (like me). lol

Gav, 2 things.
1) Punctuation!
and
2) Coca Cola just invented Santa's image. Santa is, infact, the saint Nicholas.
And if you meant they just made the image, forget the second point. I didn't know what you meant - it was worded funny.

Yes, isn't it the case that St Nicholas' image was the same as the Santa image we know today, except for the outfit being GREEN (but still with white furry bits) - and Coca Cola changed it to RED for their advertising (so it's not the entire Santa image that's Coca Cola's invention, just the color scheme)?

yes, however the use of st nicholas was restricted to certain countries, the netherlands being one, and only became the
phenomenon
of 'santa' through the coca-cola company.

Oh, you know what I mean. This country has a strong Christian tradition as it was and still is the main religion followed by people who have English and British ancestry. With no disrespect to other cultures, I wouldn't expect to go to another country which had one dominant religion other than Christianity and say that they should have special Christmas idents on their TV stations.
But anyway, this is not the place for this debate.

Getting back to the point, anybody got any good ideas for what the Beeb should do re: special idents this December?
I like the idea of short filmed sequences/scenarios (maybe even with some limited dialogue) such as families in a Santa's grotto queue; or a family gathered round the table having Christmas dinner etc etc
Towards the end, the piccy goes out of focus (like Channel 4 'circles' era) - except for a figure of 1 or 2 shaped area in the middle (so it looks a lot like the Westcountry 'W' idea) and the existing (B)(B)(C)ONE or (B)(B)(C)TWO at the bottom.
Come January 2002, the same style can be continued with more general (as opposed to festive) filmed scenarios.
When Choice and Knowledge become 3 and 4, the look should be spread to them too.

Who knows?! Do we know if the balloon will still be around then, because if it is it will probably be based on that again.

Yes, they should have Moira Stewart with a Christmas Pudding on her head, that rotates in the style of the globe. That would be good.
