I couldn't disagree any more strongly with you there. Whilst there are now many religions and cultures in the UK, which in my opinion is great, we shouldn't forget that it is still a Christian country. After all, you wouldn't see Christmas idents in non-Christian countries!

And so what if Christmas has become too commercial. Think of all the happiness it creates and of all of the families it brings together. It is the only time of the year that my family sits around the table and eats a meal together! Don't knock Christmas, it's great.

The main religion in the UK is C of E - Church of England! That's why they the idents are christmas - for christians.

I've said it before but they can't please everyone can they? Someone will always complain!

Personally, I find the Christmas idents very good and fun.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

I personally celebrate the Winter Solstice. Don't forget it was the christians who stole this holiday from us pagans. What has Christanity got to do with fur trees, plum pudding and Father Christmas

I agree with the last few posts above, we should not feel that we are not able to celebrate Christmas. Not having a Christmas Ident is like Woolworths not putting up any decorations. YTV should be ashamed for last year. What next ? Idents for Diwali and Ramadan ?

For those with alternative or no religion(s), Christmas is regarded as a 'celebrating' time.

All the BBC seem to do is show a Father Christmas - something the majority of people do associate with Christmas. They don't show Jesus - so why should they show anything else to do with other religions or whatever?

Father Christmas is regarded by children as a bringer of delights. This may be why the BBC use him as a symbol of the channel over the holiday period. It's not meant to symbolise any religion whatsoever.

But what would you rather have? Answers on a postcard! (Don't bother!)

due to their 'melting-pot' nature of different cultures, the americans say 'happy holidays' as a majority of their population, whatever spiritual beleifs they practice or hold, are given time off their work on december 25.

but santa clause is the best example - you do all realise, dont you, that the bearded red-coated santa we all know and love is an invention of the coca-cola company? and a trademarked one at that. investigate if you dont beleive me.

given that the biggest iconic symbol of the holiday is one based purely on marketing and improving sales, perhaps we shouldnt be shocked that the whole 'christmas' experience is these days based on money!

Gav, 2 things.

1) Punctuation!
and
2) Coca Cola just invented Santa's image. Santa is, infact, the saint Nicholas.
And if you meant they just made the image, forget the second point. I didn't know what you meant - it was worded funny.

yes i did mean the latter. i was born in holland and know who st nicholas is very well.

is my punctuation really that important? (what do you mean anyway? lack of commas? lowercase letters? either way, i'm afraid thats just the way i write. is it unclear somehow?

Re: Punctuation.

It was not supposed to be taken to heart. It was simply a remark!

For God's sake! I am NOT picking on you! It was supposed to be a little satirical/comedic remark.

And as you've mentioned about the 1st remark I said about punctuation, I was following what someone said about grammar! It was just a little fun - hense the lol remark. Ok, I didn't put it on this one but I thought you might realise it was the same sort of thing.
