I was thinking - seeing as it's only 133 days till 25th Dec, has the Beeb (or Lambie Nairn) already thought up ideas for the idents, have they created them by now, or are they leaving it until 23rd Dec, and will just airbrush some snow into the current idents!?

It always disappoints me that when the BBC use special christmas idents, the clock that is still used to lead into news (and the queen's speech) is the usual current one.
Why don't they 'christmasize' the clock too?
Also Dec 2000 was, as far as I know, the first time that the English regions have had christmas idents - previously the current standard one was seen to introduce regional news during the festive period (certainly in the Midlands, I presume elsewhere too).
I wonder why they've never bothered to do that before?

Yes, BBC North West had Christmas Idents. I think it would be cool to have N6 dressed out in tinsel and a tree, and Huw, George, Peter and Michael could wear Father Christmas hats, and Fiona, Sian and Anna could wear Xmas earrings! Jeremy could have his own white Father Christmas moustache as well!

Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some people have different religions and beliefs.
During Christmas 1999, BBC North used the standard balloon on Xmas Eve/Boxing Day, but then the day after when normal BBC One had gone back to normal, BBC One North used the Xmas Balloon!!
By the way, the Look North set had a Christmas Tree on set throughout the Christmas period.
I always think that BBC shoulduse their Xmas idents longer than they do, at least until the 30th december or 1st january!
Of course, last year, my ITV region didn't have any festive idents at all, which was very disapointing!
Yes it was as if Christmas wasn't happening on YTV last year. I couldn't understand why no effort had been made, they could have at least stuck on the year befores idents.
In my opinion, the best-ever Christmas idents were the BBC ONE '12 days of Christmas' idents from 1997 - '11 Lords a Leaping' and '5 Gold Rings' were my faves! Last years' were boring - in fact there was only the one ident and no variety at all!
The one used in 2000 was OK, but got repetitive after a while because it was just one ident over and over!
Midlands Today had a rather large and very OTT Christmas tree in their studio and took up most of the studio, it looked rather nice though. Also they were still using the old Central Birmingham view at that point and Centenary Square had lots of Christmas trees up their and it really gave the programme a lovely feeling.
East Midlands Today used a smaller Christmas tree that moved about the studio (!) and sometimes presented with Dominic Heale during the shorter bulletins.
Carlton used absolutely brilliant idents for Christmas and they got a good airing and rotated well, so each time you would see a different one rather than the same one over and over. (i.e. the eye ident OVERUSED in the evenings on Carlton Central)
Also, they even had an ident for the new year, which I thought was very good, they didn't need to. Especially when some stations didn't even bother with Christmas! Then again Lambie Nairn does create good work and is devoted to creating as many idents as possible. So why not show them off?

Good point. I do not follow any religion, so don't celebrate Christmas. I think it's wrong that the purely commercial (as opposed to religious) festival celebrated by a lot of non-Christians in December is called 'Christmas'. After all, there are no examples of other religious festivals (whether from Christianity or another religion) having had a purely commercial festival derive from them. Even if there were, such instances (and also 'Christmas') should not use the name of the religious festival from which they derive.
I don't know why everyone slagged off Birmingham city council a couple of years ago for suggesting that the non-religious 'Christmas' be renamed 'Winterval' (meant to sound like 'interval') - they had a good point!
Only having special idents for a Christian festival is unfair on other religions - maybe they should make more of an effort to do it for Diwali, Passover, Ramadan etc. Either that or mark no religious occasions on TV (including Christmas).
From the point of view of my religious beliefs (or lack of them!), I'd favour the first option. But from my TV-logo-enthusiast's point of view, I'd like more excuses for special versions of idents!
