Hmm. The news variant is not sombre enough IMO.

I agree. After the three notes, it should've just been ambient.

Yeah, I'd prefer that too - so, thirded. Not ambience in the FX sense of course, but a minimal score or sustained texture, would have been the better option. That'd be more of a classic approach and works well for the announcer - but composers don't take that route with idents very often anymore; more's the pity. Albeit 2007 was worse, as news versions go!

Well, compare it with the 2009 version which I think got it right:

Strange the random usage of last year's BBC light-boxes on BBC Two's trailers.

It wouldn't be a BBC Two package without inconsistent box variations!

Good to see the next pointer is being used by Network this year.

Yes folks, I saw the Christmas 2010 ident on BBC One prior to the start of Strictly Come Dancing.

I can sleep easy tonight knowing that.

As for timing - way too early as always, especially as I don't think there is anything remotely festive in the BBC1 schedule this week. Ideally they'd leave them as late as possible, but failing that I think the best compromise would be just to use the Christmas ident around Christmas specials in the week or two running up until Christmas, and then go full time from Christmas Eve (or a couple of days earlier if appropriate).

Having the one ident doesn't help either and I see no reason why Snowball and Penguins at least can't be mixed in with the new ident just to give a bit of variation - even if it's only out of prime time.

I agree with that last part as there's no programme theme running through this year. Especially as snowball had a similar theme to people gathering together & rounding up for Christmas.

Maybe it's an ageing thing, but years ago I used to love seeing Christmas pres as soon as possible, and now I'm wanting them to leave it until a later point. Not that I'm becoming a scrooge, more to make it feel different. In use for too long makes them become stale too soon, and makes the week or so of Christmas seem like any normal day after using them for regular schedules.

I agree. It's only the 12th and already I'm bored of Christmas. The adverts started way too early.

I do hope you're referring to the between-programmes "next" slides and not to things superimposed on programmes.

Absolutely Wink :

I made the point as Network continued with the usual pointers/slides last year despite the availability of the above design.

The current idents is better then last years because it doesn't focus on one TV show. I felt really sick of David last year because of that Dr Who ident Wink

Whereas this year everyone is already sick to death of seeing real snow, and have suffered enough chaos from it, so what do the Beeb go and do for their ident ? Wink

BBC Two's Domino ident in 2001. Funny the first time. Quite funny the second. Oh, that one again, huh?

I think the nodnirG household heartily sick of that jaunty arrangement of the theme and car-scraping joke by Christmas Day... let alone New Year.

However, a nicely thought-out, well-produced and attractive, humorous, enjoyable ident. But you really can have far too much of a good thing. 3 weeks? Really?

BBC One: Needs more variety
BBC Two: Needs something new. Even if it just adding Santa Claus to the ident saying hohoho
BBC Three/BBC Four: Don't mind these channels reusing same idents as they should focus on main channels
