Digital channel BBC Choice is launching a new series, 60seconds, which promises a modern approach to news journalism.

At launch, the service will consist of one-minute news bulletins at 19:00, 21:00, 23:00 and 01:00. Each bulletin contains the main national, international, sports and entertainment news highlights.

It kicks off on Monday July 16th.

If it's going to be on at 9pm, that'll be one quick changeover from Pricey if they're doing it in the same studio!

Cheers, Asa

Will they have time for a studio if they've got all that to do in 60 seconds?! But seriously don't get your hopes up about opening titles, I doubt they'll have time for anything lavish!

Even Channel 5 bulletins are longer than 60 seconds, aren't they?

In the days of daytime regional bulletins after the hourly news summaries, the regional opts at 1000, 1100 and 1200 were 1'15' and those after the 1455 and 1555 (not sure about those times) were only 1'00'.

The rule of thumb was usually four stories in 1'15', three in 1'00'. (You lost a few seconds saying Hello and Goodbye!) Occasionally you could squeeze an extra one in if they were written tightly and read quickly!

Some regions only used stills to illustrate these bulletins - and Norwich (and qiute a few other regions like Leeds and So'ton I think) were self-opt/self-opped. They didn't have a director/vision mixer, the presenter pressed their own buttons to do the sound and vision mixing and opting ina and out of Network. I suspect the Choice News service will be a little more sophisticated than this!)

And the presenters are to be Tazeen Ahmed and Sumit Bose. What are these doing at the moment? I've heard of the second name but not the first...

So, July 16 we will see the launch of this and ITN 5 News (if we get new presentation for that at 5.30 and 7.30) and then two weeks later we have Sky News... what a month!!

Sumit has worked for the Science Unit at BBC News, though not sure if he was doing that before he joined the 60 Seconds team as I haven't seen him on-air. He used to report for the Science Review programme on News 24.

Tazeen has, I think, worked for Liquid News (produced by BBC News for BBC Choice) as a reporter.

Thanks for that - I presume it will be in the Newsbeat on Radio One style of programming as they seem to fit quite a lot into a minute or so.

A lot of the channels here do that throughout the nights, mostly, and occasionally during the day. Greece being what it is though means that these so-called 1' / 60'' news bulletins are usually around 1.5 - 2 mins Smile

Its to be done in the same studio but on a slightly different set.

Also, as I think someone mentioned before, they are considering launching a sports programme under the Liquid News setup. I can see them launching a few programmes under this brand!

Nice to see you getting excited about the bulletins I'm now working on.
I'm not going to give much away because that would spoil it. But expect a lot in 60 Seconds. There will be a web site to go with the bulletins!
I can say it will be a different set to Liquid with new titles and new music!

Well the North West Today bulletin in Breakfast is self-opt. Nigel Jay does it, as he doesn't waffle, and after doing Breakfast News for most of the last decade, he certainly is skilled at reading the news, making jokes and handing over to the weather! He even opts back before the sting is played! This however unlike Peter Levy of Look North who advertises everything but Look North, the main one BBC Radio Humberside. He actually wastes time going through who'll be on during his slot, before opting back half way through the sting! One person unsuited to North West Today is Martin Henfield, as he runs over into the sting when going back during the BBC Ten O'Clock News when he has 6 minutes to do the North West Tonight summary! One more thing about Nigel Jay - you can always tell it his him doing the news before you actually see him, as he famously always pushes the opt button very hard so it clicks. You'll be able to hear it on some Breakfast stuff I have sent to Asa.
