What's this then - a super extended Doncaster opt-out or something? I hope they're not going to do this another 3 times this evening...

Doncaster is not an opt-out, it seems it is being carried on the network. I am getting it on DSat England, and analogue London and Southampton, currently.  (An opt-out is where a regional centre cuts away from Network to show something different - this is not the case with Doncaster this evening)

I believe that rather than having lots and lots of regional OBs for the opt-outs, as in previous years, the regions are concentrating on a few short films to cover how money has been spent/raised in the local area.

I think there are fewer, larger, better resourced OBs (Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, Portsmouth, Leicester, Doncaster) being networked into the main programme for all to see.

I quite like the studio in London - it's simple, clean, nicely lit, they've alread been using the odd pyro effect, and the main stage is large enough to accommodate a decent sized band without them being on top of each other, and allows other settings to be quickly set and struck, without the whole thing looking too contrived and fussy.

Less is often more...

It has allowed quite a few nice crane shots... (and the odd crane in shot as well - but that's what happens in 6+ hours of chaotic, live TV...)

Of course the Doncaster bit is networked, you don't think we'd have Katy Hill presenting otherwise!

Last year we had Peter Levy presenting a poor talent show

BBC Wales have a habit of running their regional black and yellow scroller at the same time as the network one, which is confusing, as they both run at the same time on top of each other!

Well they have interactive - but the press red logo is all over the phone number dog - very bad planning on someone's part!
This is how it looks on digital terrestrial:

It disappears after a few seconds and simply links to a section of BBC Text.

I am in Northern Ireland but have a BBC Card registered to a London address so I can watch the Network feed rather than the Belfast feed which opts out of the network for the entire night !!

They do throw a few time delayed London bits in here and there (they must be using a TiVo!)

What horribles colours in the interactive bit !

The first regional opt has started (at about 1957ish) after the Twist (via a Dancing Pudsey bumper) :

Widescreen film on BBC One England on DSat
Different film on BBC One London
Live OB on BBC One South (Nice to see some regions doing some live presentation during the opts - Southampton always do one of the better ones)

The opt-back point was a full-frame phone number

No live studio in the North West this year, the opt-out was simply Gordon Burns in the North West Tonight studio introducing some films about CiN.
