Well, if they're going to lead to improved weather presentation on the BBC then surely it is a good use of the licence fee.

How can you improve weather presentation? I mean, it's the weather! Nothing more, nothing less!

You can improve on anything. The current weather graphics have been in virtually uninterrupted use (save for the slight change of font and the text moving from top to bottom of the screen) for nearly twenty years. That is a long time in a modern world. Things have to move on. People want to see the weather reports at more convenient times now than they did in the seventies and eighties, so a more sophisticated system is, in my opinion, most welcome. Whether they get the forecast right mind you is another matter!

Well then - what, in your opinion does weather presentation need to make it better without being gimmicky?
Is there anything that would actually improve it that the current system can't support?

Well that looks quite nice. The 3D effects used on any news programme in the UK are always quite dire and so some nice 3D graphics will be welcome, with some dramatic sweeps.

I do agree with the comments about ITV weather - their graphics can be silly, especially on Granada whether where they have clouds with faces blowing wind and sun symbols with sunglasses on and the like.

That's what I call "media bullsh*t". It's an excuse to change for the sake of it.

Here's a random selection of shots from New Zealand's Channel One Weather:

This is like a fly-by forecast of the temps, travelling up the country:

How tacky do those look? There is absolutely nothing wrong with the current BBC graphics, which I think look a lot better than those ones.

I agree. Ive always liked the BBC's weather graphics compared to other broadcasters. Any other broadcaster feels the need to show proper colours - e.g. really dark blue for the oceans, dark greens for land masses. I think some of the worse offenders for this are Sky News weather, and ITV weather from a few years back.

The BBC's current pres looks much better - using clear bright colours.

It would be a bad move for the beeb to change to these horrid 3D graphics.

Wouldn't bother me personally, as long as I knew whether it was going to rain tomorrow. But, I'm saying that the current graphics are quite suitable, do their job and don't need improving. As I said, a case of changing something for the sake of it.

They are piss poor graphics in comparison to the BBCs current graphics. I think that perhaps they may be able to substitute some of the graphics for their own and chage bits but if the images above are an accurate interpretation of what we're going to see, I'm not at all impressed.
