The fact they had to film Doctors in the foyer because some red tape stopped them using proper studios a few feet away really shows the professionalism involved in utilising their facilities.

I was there a few times shortly before Pebble Mill closed and the studio was being used for Doctors - and the "foyer" that the reception of the surgery was in had been the original Pebble Mill at One studio and the Good Morning with Anne and Nick studio - so there was a history of making programmes in that part of the building.

It is very sad that it has gone though, more for the inability to broadcast networked programmes from a studio in Birmingham now (such as the One Show).

unable? the one show proved that it could be done - all be it with investment.

From a Portakabin yes... And where's the One Show going to come from now on a permanent basis?
i think you mean scanner and temporary studio. it was a pilot and an OB, what did you expect?

Exactly - there is no permanent studio (available) to broadcast from - it was little more than a portakabin built on the steps of a shopping centre, I don't care how you dress it up with your technical lingo!

well, as shocking as this may seem, the bbc did not build a spare studio on the off chance that a live network programme might come to birmingham. however, the lack of such a studio does not immediately render bbc bham unable to broadcast a live daily show. indeed the one show proved that there is still the behind the scenes infrastructure - to accommodate such a venture [all-be-it with investment].

i am not arguing that the mailbox is as well equipped for such things as pebble mill was before it was run into the ground. however i am arguing that the fact that one show successfully transmitted proves that bbc bham still can accommodate live network production. yes they used temporary facilities - but then so do watchdog iirc and i'm sure other live programmes do too.

I take your point on the infrastructure issue - but in my original post I did say "from a studio", and by that I meant a fully equiped permanent one, like there used to be once-upon-a-time at Pebble Mill (and therefore back to the original question about keeping PM v Mailbox).

Hasn't the lack of a permanent studio here been just a little bit to do with the One Show ending up in London? Would it have been more likley to have stayed if, say, they could've convereted a canal-side unit for the show's studio instead?
